The power of a good blush is never to be underestimated. Wearing the right one can bring your entire makeup look together while adding a healthy wash of color and dimension to your cheeks. There are so many different options out there that are super affordable yet don’t skimp on performance. All it takes is narrowing down which ones are worth adding to your makeup bag. To help you out in that process, we rounded up a few of our favorites and gathered tips on how and where to apply blush.

How to Apply Blush

Your application method will differ based on the type of blush you use. If you’re working with a powder blush, you’re going to want to apply it with a brush, such as the IT Cosmetics Love Beauty Fully Flawless Blush Brush #277. Simply swirl the brush in the powder, then tap off the excess before applying to your cheeks in circular motions. You can use the same brush to apply liquid or cream blushes, or you can use your fingers or a sponge to gently tap them into your skin.

Where to Apply Blush

Where you apply your blush will also vary based on the type of look you’re trying to achieve. For a rosy, natural look, try applying blush to the apples of your cheeks — aka the part of your cheeks that gets rounder when you smile. For a more dramatic, chiseled look, try the draping technique — this involves applying blush to the tops of your cheekbones in order to make them look more defined. You can also apply a light dusting of blush across your nose and the apples of your cheeks for a beachy, sun-kissed look. We suggest playing with different blush placements in front of the mirror to figure out which look you like best. Don’t be afraid to experiment — your blush placement might change based on the rest of your makeup, too!
