5 Festive Nail Effects That Look Good On Everyone

Think you have to buy a new dress or sport a sky-high up-do in order to look holiday ready? Then think again! All it takes to get into the spirit of the season is a little nail polish and drying time.

Hot holiday nail trend: Go classic

If the rest of the year your go-to polish tends to be a nude or neutral–think pale pink, barely-there beige or clear polish–then swipe on a holiday shade of red. “A gorgeous, rich wine hue is a chic, classic look this time of year,” suggests makeup artist Sonia Kashuk.  Try: Lancome Soft Cream Red,  Essie Nail Color Lollipop or Sonia Kashuk Stop Whining.
Hot holiday nail trend: Go for the gold – or silver
“These colors look like brilliantly festive tinsel, right on your fingertips,” says Kashuk.  On their own gold and silver are gorgeous. “But if you want truly show-stopping nails for a special holiday party, try experimenting with a half moon manicure,” suggests Kashuk. Simply paint the entire nail silver and then paint the moon-shaped part of the nail (near your cuticle) gold. Or vice versa. Either way pairing these two beautiful colors gives you a look that’s the perfect mix of trendy, sophisticated and fun! Try: Sonia Kashuk Smoke and Mirrors or L’Oreal Colour Riche Nail Because You’re Worth It.

Hot holiday nail trend: Glitter it up

This year’s glitter polishes make last year’s look like child’s play. The latest crop has larger pieces of glitter so that nails look dazzling from near and far and these glitter polishes come in an array of festive colors. A few to try: Deborah Lippman Shake Your Groove Thing, a flickering gold glitter polish, or Deborah Lippman Stairway to Heaven, an iridescent icicle glitter.
Hot holiday nail trend: Classic with a twist
You can easily glam up classic colors by adding a few rhinestone crystals.  “One pretty way is to make a straight line at the tip of your ring finger with clear rhinestones,” suggests Donna Perillo, owner of Sweet Lily Natural Nail Spa in New York City.  Look for rhinestones at your local drugstore and then apply them when nails are wet. Another option is nail glitter, which you sprinkle on top of wet polish.
Hot holiday nail trend: Get creative with nail art pens

Nail art pens are nail polish pens with fine tips so you can get creative with designs either on your bare nail or on top of dry polish.  “Most of these are easy to use and come in lots of fun colors,” says Perillo, who suggests pretty, winter designs like a snowman or a snowflake.  Don’t have a steady hand? Then get some guidance with a nail stencil kit or simply draw basic designs like stripes and dots. Try: Kiss Nail Artist Fine Art Nail Pens or Topshop Nail Art Pens.
