A Beauty Redux at The CFDA Awards

At most awards ceremonies, guests are welcomed by tuxedo-clad ushers bearing flutes of champagne. But the superglamorous crowd of celebrities, designers, editors, and bloggers attending last night's Council of Fashion Designers of America 2010 Awards gala were welcomed by something a bit more fitting of the occasion: 45 models wearing straight-from-the-runway looks by the three nominees for Womenswear Designer of the Year. Standing on bleachers outside the entrance to Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, models posed in the same outfits, makeup, and hairstyles from each designer's fall 2010 show. Talk about deja vu! Several hours before the first red carpet arrival, I was backstage watching makeup artist James Kaliardos recreate the makeup looks from those three shows: Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, and Alexander Wang. "This gives people who weren't at the shows the opportunity to experience what they were really like," said Kaliardos of the tip-to-toe makeovers. But this wasn't your average copycat job. Rather, Kaliardos and his team remade the beauty looks using all products from L’Oréal Paris. It was the ultimate runway-to-reality challenge! And Kaliardos pulled it off perfectly. To recreate the siren-red lips at Donna Karan, he swiped on L'Oréal Paris HIP Studio Secrets Professional Liquid Lipcolor in Turbulent (check out the photo above). The cloud of copper seen around the eyes at Alexander Wang was redone using L’Oréal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Shadow Pigment in Progressive (below, top photo). And for the spiky, clustered lashes from Marc Jacobs, Kaliardos wiggled the tip of L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Volume Building Mascara in between the lashes again and again to get them nice and clumpy (below, bottom photo). Of course, the weather here in New York is just a tad hotter now than it was back in February when the shows originally took place, so to help all the looks hold up in the heat, Kaliardos prepped models' skin with L’Oréal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Magic Perfecting Base before applying makeup. Good thing he did, too, as I witnessed several models—faces fully made-up—laying out in the sun while passing the time until the ceremony. When I asked Kaliardos if this made him nervous, he laughed and said, "Nah—I like it when the makeup looks a little soaked in."
