3 Runway-Inspired Ways to Wear a Bun

You heard it here first—buns are the new ponytails (judging from the Fall 2012 runways). Here are three stylish and interesting ways to rock the trendy look. Pony-who?

Twisty with a tail

When you can’t decide between a traditional bun and a simple ponytail, do what the fashion-forward do: Go for both, like the lovely look we saw at Phoebe English. To recreate your own haute hybrid bun with an adorable little tail, simply twist your strands around the base of your ponytail once or twice (depending on how lengthy your ponytail is), and pull the ends through the middle so that they hang freely. Secure the base with a few tress-tone bobby pins.

Relaxed and off to the side

Don’t you just love hair that looks laissez-faire? We do—and that’s why we’re obsessed with the laidback bun we spotted at Rebecca Minkoff. Perfect for those with hair that’s naturally full of texture; get the look by grabbing your strands and rolling them around in both hands, twisting down to the ends. Wrap the hair around itself into a low loose bun and secure with several bobby pins. Loosen a few face-framing strands on both sides for a grunge-glam finish.

A fabulously frizzy topper

For the record, whimsical topknots will always be a winning look in our book, so it’s no surprise that we’re completely crazy about the fuzzy version we glimpsed at Mary Katrantzou. One-part uptown ballerina, two-parts downtown disheveled, it’s easy-peasy to recreate. Just pull your hair up high and secure on top of your crown with an elastic, then tease your hair a bit before loosely wrapping it around the base and inserting a few pins to lock your strands in place.

I always go to a topknot (whether it be messy, braided, twisted, etc) because it accentuates my thin face shape, and I love them!

Top knots are perfect. No matter how sloppy it is, it still looks great. Win!

Haha, now that buns are “in” I don’t really rock them anymore. The first two used to be my go to since it only took either a hair-tie or two bobby pins to get the “look”
