Foundation used to cloak skin with a heavy layer to completely mask imperfections. But that has all changed in recent years. Thanks to science, these products have developed to offer thinner, more breathable, more natural coverage.

Now a variety of beauty brands have taken foundation to still a whole new level. Here are the formulas of the future, and what makes them so amazing.

YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat

YSL is known for bringing luminosity to skin, especially through its 20-year-old cult-favorite Touche Éclat pen. Based on that pen comes the much-anticipated YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat, a lightweight gel formula that is free of cakey opaque powders and smooths over skin to light up the face.

Giorgio Armani Maestro Foundation

New from Giorgio Armani is Maestro, whose beauty lies in its formula that is free of both water and powder. Instead it utilizes a pigment blend suspended in oil, which ensures the foundation always glides on flawlessly and never looks or feels heavy. According to Tim Quinn, national director of creative artistry for Armani, “The genius of Maestro is in its touch. The revolutionary texture demands touch—applied with fingertips for sheer perfection.”

Dior DiorSkin AirFlash

With this product, Dior takes foundation out of a bottle and places it into a spray can. With the press of a button, this ultrafine mist blurs blemishes and imperfections and provides a radiant and natural finish.

Temptu AIR Pod Foundation

Temptu brought the makeup artist’s airbrush kit to the masses, with its AIRbrush that enables users to plug in pods filled with its foundation, blush, highlighter and more. The feather-light foundation features water-encapsulated pigment and light-diffusing patented SilkSpheres to sit on top of the skin and create a soft-focus finish.

Lancôme Ôscillation Powerfoundation

This Lancôme mineral foundation partners with an application cushion that delivers 7,000 vibrations per minute to glide effortlessly over the face for perfect, blendable coverage. The massaging works with the minerals to smoothen, soften and revitalize skin over time.

Dermablend Cover Creme

Dermablend Cover Creme is perfect for those in need of medium to heavy coverage who aren’t necessarily fans of heavier formulations. Thanks to an improved texture, this cream feels lightweight and smooth. It lasts for a full 12 hours, too.

Maybelline Dream Nude Airfoam

Maybelline Dream Nude Airfoam foundation in a pump offers the iconic brand's most lightweight formula to date for what is calls "100 percent nude perfection."
