Daring mouth designs are becoming increasingly de rigueur, with everything from juicy ombré to eye-popping neon hues dressing lips in attention-grabbing color. So what’s next for women who like a bold statement? If makeup artist Romy Soleimani has her way, you’ll be kissing up to a seriously purple lip that, like its predecessors, requires more than one product to achieve. Here she breaks down the ripened plum pout she created for Cynthia Rowley’s fall 2013 ready-to-wear show.

Step 1: Prep your complexion by applying a luminous foundation and concealer (only where needed). Try: YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat and YSL Touche Éclat.

Step 2: Begin to assemble the romantic eye look by swiping on a brick shadow from your upper lash lines to above the creases. Try: MAC Eye Shadow in Red Brick.

Step 3: Brush on a dark wine shadow from your upper lash lines to your creases, and below your lower lash lines. Try: Stila Eye Shadow in Pigalle.

Step 4: For a more lived-in look, pat a touch of moisturizer onto the eye area. Try: Joanna Vargas Rejuvenating Serum.

Step 5: Define fringe with a coat of mascara. Try: Lancôme Définicils Precious Cells.

Step 6: Create a moist color base for the semi-matte lip using Stila Color Balm Lipstick in Gemma. Apply it to the entire lip. Tip: This pink-violet hue has a vibrancy that will give this darker mouth design dimension.

Step 7: Using your fingertip, pat a matte deep plum eye shadow and a vibrant grape eye shadow that has a hint of pearl onto lips. (Soleimani used Improvise and Glance eye shadows from the Stila In the Moment Eye Shadow Palette.) Keep your application light; matte eye shadow can become cakey if layered too thickly.

One of the first instances where I’ve seen a long bezalr worn well – I usually think they would swallow me, but you look fabulous! And the color is perfection. I love these colors that have come back this season!
