Contributor Jordan Reid shares her beauty and style know-how to get you prepped for those seasonal events and special occasions in which you want to put your best look forward.

Did you know I used to be a competitive ice skater? It’s true. And wow, early '90s ice-skater beauty was a whole thing of its own. Let’s just say that my crimper and bedazzler were in overdrive for some time there.

It’s been a while since my Lutz jump has been in peak form, but I still love hitting the ice a couple of times a year—both because I get to impress my husband with a little twirling and because it’s such a fun activity for which to get done up. Cozy sweaters! Rosy cheeks! Noncrimped hair! So today, let’s talk about how to get pretty for ice skating.

Makeup

I love the look of glowing, flushed skin and barely-there makeup for ice skating.

Start with a moisturizer containing SPF (I like La Roche-Posay Anthelios 45 Ultra Light Fluid for Face) to protect against the sun’s rays, which are magnified when they bounce off of the ice.

Next add some healthy-looking color. Start with a dusting of bronzer, like L’Oréal Paris Glam Bronze Bronzing Powder, and then layer on a warm blush with a little shimmer to it. NARS Blush in Orgasm is the gold standard for a natural flush.

On the eyes, try smudging a golden brown liner into your lash lines. Try: MAC Eye Kohl in Powersurge. Top it off with a high-wattage mascara, like L’Oréal Paris Extra-Volume Collagen Mascara, which contains hydra-collagen for maximizing volume without clumping or flaking.

Finish with a sheer, dewy gloss. I love Giorgio Armani Gloss d’Armani in 515, a perfect rosy shade that looks especially pretty on slightly paler skin tones like my own.

Hair

For outdoor sports, it’s all about the ponytail. A twist on the traditional look that works even if you’re wearing a beanie is a side ponytail.

Start by blow-drying hair smooth. Then apply a small amount of anti-frizz serum to the lower two-thirds of your strands. Use a 1-inch barrel iron to curl small sections, curling in different directions for the most natural effect. Sweep hair to one side and secure it with an elastic. Pull a few tendrils out around your face to give the style some softness. Finish with a misting of flexible-hold hair spray.

Dress

You know, there’s a lot to be said for a hat with a pom-pom on top. In my book, it’s a must-own. Pair your knit cap with matching gloves or mittens and a cozy sweater in a bright color. Then pull on fantastic denims with a little stretch, because theoretically you’re exercising and you’re ready to get moving. Or falling. Whichever.
