The new Mrs. Justin Timberlake emitted sultry sex appeal at the New York City premiere of her new romantic comedy, Playing for Keeps. “I love this look for the holidays because it’s a modern, easy-to-achieve diversion from the classic eye and red lip,” says makeup artist Hillary Clark. “The eye is smoky yet soft, and the sculpted cheek and matte lip are very pretty and unexpected for evening.” Clark shared her tips on getting Jessica Biel's smoldering look using an application technique called the “value shift.”
Step 1: Start by applying foundation with a damp sponge for a sheer, natural look. Then set the foundation with a loose powder to prevent shine. Try: YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat Illuminating Foundation and Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder.
Step 2: Sculpt and highlight your cheekbones with a blush trio, like Lancôme Blush Subtil Palette in Nectar Lace, and a fan brush. Using the deeper color, cradle the brush under the cheekbones and sweep it inward toward the center of your face. Then pop the brighter color on the apples of your cheeks, pulling the color toward the hairline. Next sweep the highlighter across the high point of your cheekbones. Finally blend the three colors so that you can't see lines of demarcation.
Step 3: Use a felt-tip brow pen, like Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color, to fill in brows. Finish by combing them with a clear brow gel.
Step 4: Prep lids with a long-wearing primer and let it dry. Try: Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion.
Step 5: Apply eye shadow using the value-shift technique, meaning shadows go from darkest at the lashlines to lightest under the brows in a seamless transition. Start at the top lashlines with the darkest—almost black shadow—and blend it across the lids and into the creases. Work the next darkest color—a shimmering pewter—from the creases upward, avoiding the brow area. Pick up a touch of the lightest shade—a shimmering white—and highlight just under the brows. Try: Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Eyeshadow Quad in Maestro. Using a small brush, blend the black and pewter shadow together and smudge the color along the entire lower lashlines. Dab a touch of the white shimmering shadow at the inner corner of your eyes.
Step 6: Apply mascara on both your top and bottom lashes. Try: L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black.
Step 7: Define your lip with a matte lipstick in a beige tone that has a hint of pink, like Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Dolce.
