Actress Jessica Chastain is always stunning on the red carpet, but the Veronica Lake-esque locks she debuted at the opening night after-party for her new Broadway play, The Heiress, ranked among her top five best looks. “Working with Jessica gives me the opportunity to make magic happen," says her mane man, Ted Gibson. "She is so beautiful it hurts!” Gibson adds that this hairstyle is so popular because it's sexy and classic. It’s also deceptively simple, using pin curls, which require no elaborate equipment and have worked wonders for almost one hundred years. Here’s how to get these updated retro waves in a flash.
Step 1: Apply volumizing spray to wet hair to add texture and thickness. Try: Matrix Total Results Amplify Wonder Boost Root Lifter. Then blow-dry strands with a large round brush to smooth hair while imparting even more volume.
Step 2: After your hair is fully dry, set strands in about 20 pin curls in varying directions. To set a pin curl, take a small section of hair and comb it smooth. Then wrap the strand of hair around your index finger until you get to the scalp. Secure the curl to your scalp with a couple of bobby pins.
Step 3: Once all your hair is set into pin curls, spray strands with a medium-hold hair spray, like Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hairspray. Then blow-dry curls for a few minutes and leave them for another 15 to 20 minutes to set the style.
Step 4: Take out the bobby pins and release the curls. Then brush out the curls gently, just to slightly loosen and smooth them.
Step 5: Create a side part and brush hair on the opposite side behind your ear, securing it with bobby pins. Finish with another blast of hair spray to set the look.
