Rooney Mara singularly redefined Goth makeup and put the combination of dark hair, an alabaster complexion and deep red lipstick in the spotlight. So imagine our surprise when she showed up at the New York premiere of her new film, Side Effects, looking soft and pretty in a blush pout, rosy cheeks, a chestnut eye, slicked-back strands and a lacy white dress. “I love Rooney's look here,” says makeup artist Maureen Shields. “It’s reminiscent of Louise Brooks, the 'It' girl of the '20s—so polished and glamorous.” She tells us how to create this light beauty.
Step 1: Start by creating a perfect velvety complexion by applying a matte foundation to even out your skin tone and hide imperfections. Try: Giorgio Armani Maestro Foundation.
Step 2: Apply a rosy nude neutral blush along the contour of your cheeks, rather than on the apples of your cheeks, for a sculpted look. Try: Giorgio Armani Sheer Blush in 5-Beige Violet.
Step 3: Fill in the brow with a brow powder or eye shadow. Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in Mahogany is a perfect shade for brunettes, like Mara, since it’s dark and has a soft effect that’s not as severe as black.
Step 4: Use black liner, like MAC Eye Kohl in Smolder, to fill in your upper lashes only. Then brush a shimmery taupe eye shadow onto your upper lids, sweeping it out at the corners to create a cat-eye effect. Use it to also softly line your lower lashes. Try: YSL Ombres Duolumieres in 1-Heavenly Beige-Astral Brown.
Step 5: Finish by applying a lengthening black mascara to your top and bottom lashes. Try: YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils in High Density Black.
Step 6: For the pretty, soft lip, choose a moist, luminous beige with a pink undertone. Try: Giorgio Armani Rouge d'Armani in #103.
