Beauty Icon: Stevie Nicks

The beauty icon: Stevie Nicks

Her signature look: Gypsy glam. Nicks may have single-handedly placed hair adornments on the style map. Hats, feathers, veils and scarves all topped her shaggy mane. Her makeup, meanwhile, married porcelain skin and a focus on the eye. To open up, brighten and define her eyes, she rimmed the inner waterline with white or nude eyeliner and then applied dark smoky shadows to the outer corners.

Her style legacy: Nicks's carefree spirit inspired an untamed beauty look: wild, choppy locks and doll-like makeup. It was the perfect and unexpected fusion of flower child meets glam rocker.

Her "it" moment: With Fleetwood Mac, the singer's 1978 Album of the Year Grammy win for Rumours. Nicks was cut short during her acceptance speech and was able to only utter, “Warner Brothers, thank you!” Her bewitching style still captivated the world and later became iconic of the era.

Her now moment: To the delight of old and new fans alike, Fleetwood Mac will reunite for a 2013 tour and the band's classic songs will be covered by new music darlings like Best Coast, Karen Elson, MGMT and Lykke Li on an album titled Just Tell Me That You Want Me.

Her beauty booty:

  • To get Nicks's signature textured waves, use Redken Quick Tease 15 hairspray.
  • To create the color of her signature strands, women with dark hair should pick Redken Chromatics 7Ago and women with light hair can try Redken Chromatics 7Gi. Highlights and a glaze will complete the look.
  • To make eyes appear big and bright, like Nicks, try MAC Chromagraphic Pencil in NC15/NW20 in the waterline.
  • Get her smoky eye with Burberry Sheer Eye Shadow in Chestnut No.05.
  • Apply Chanel Mat Lumière for the musician's matte and flawless complexion.
  • Finish the look with a neutral pink-brown lip. Try: Lancôme Rouge in Love in Rouge Rendez-Vous.

Straight from her lips: “By the time I was five, I was a little diva.”

What is your favorite Stevie Nicks look?

It never surprises me to see straight men giving candid, brutally honest opinions about aging celebrities looks and how they have aged badly (in their opinion) and how they are no longer “hot”… but it gives me a chuckle to read all the nasty comments directed at her, yet most of these men I assume (if they know of Stevie’s work) are old enough to be in the same age range as she is. So that must mean they are also not as “hot” as they used to be (if they ever were hot to begin with). Most of us aren’t as fit or tight in all areas of our faces and bodies like we used to be. Big deal. But it baffles me why these same fat, balding and aging straight men have the authority to talk about a celebrity’s lack of sex appeal when the same could be said about them?! I sometimes wish some of these cowards (though I appreciate the candidness) would post a recent pic of themselves so we can judge them based on their looks too? They must know by now that they are no longer sexy and that the only women into them are either sexy, young gold diggers with younger lovers on the side or desperate older women who are just as flabby and old as they are. Or they are just plain delusional and THINK they are hot and that women want them. It’s kind of like the straight male homophobes who think that every gay guy wants them or is undressing them with their eyes….. child, please!! Get over yourselves.

some of the comments here are disgusting and the reason why women are literally killing themselves to try to stay young! it is not possible to stay 20 forever-people fu*king age! and for a woman in her mid 60′s, stevie looks DAMN good! i’m glad that the majority of comments are about stevie’s LEGENDARY status, talent and beauty! in my opinion, stevie (and Lindsey Buckingham) made Fleetwood mac. their best-loved songs are the ones stevie sang lead on like “Rhiannon”, “dreams”, “gold dust woman” and “gypsy”. her voice was/ is captivating and watching footage of her from the 70′s and early 80′s twirling around on stage in her chiffon dresses is almost magical. everything about stevie is magical-those pouty lips, that golden hair, her unique gypsy garb and that sexy gravelly voice. she is the original bohemian goddess and a true rock n’ roll icon.

Yea she was HOTT back than and had a GREAT voice and wrote fantastic songs. Besides from her tremendous contribution to Fleetwood Mac she also had a successful solo album and several GREAT albums many which could have been Mac songs too. Her music with the band and solo remains high on my play list. As far as the way she looks now who cares? Aging is a bitch, I’m just past 50 now, bald, fatter, oh well. But I have to admit I still like younger girls and looking at those old photo of her, damn she was one of the hottest females in rock and one of the most talented!

Anyone who would question her looks at age 64 is absolutely nuts! She turns 65 on the 26th. I just saw Fleetwood Mac in Tulsa Wednesday night and I had 5th row seats. She doesn’t look a day over 50 and she doesn’t look like she’s had any obvious face work. She showing a little bit of jowl line but for her age, very minimal. Of course she had on makeup but it wasn’t painted on like many aging woman. I wasn’t fond of her eye lining but she is still gorgeous for her age. In comparing her to some of the elderly women I know, who are still a few years younger than her, there is no comparison. She wins hands down!

Well, she’s old now. Positively ancient, a dozen years more ancient than my ancient butt. ;) Funny, she seems to be holding up better than I am.Though, she has the advantage of not serving for over 27 years in the military. ;) So, if anything, she’s defying age and gravity quite well.Toasting with my coffee cup that she continues defying age and gravity for decades to come!

I used to tell my paralegal students at UCLA that in order to get an “A” in their class they had to put “Stevie Nicks is my favortie female performer” on their final exam papers. I played a DVD of her Red Rock concert on the big screen in the class as the students came in. I have been to quite a few of Stevie’s and Fleetwood Mac concerts. I love Stevie Nicks. She is absolutely incredible. I would love to be the “Beast” to her “Beauty.” God bless you Stevie Nicks. Stay happy and healthy. See you at the MGM Grand in May, 2013.

I have always embraced underground 60s and 70s rock music over anything since so was not real big on Fleetwood. One night I saw Fleetwood do Rhiannon live on some late night video. Mesmorized. Steve Nicks came off like some female Jim Morrison. Since then I fell in love with her voice, her music and her looks. I think she is the most beautiful rock singer ever. I also think her singing is my favorite of any female rock singer. Little chance I will ever change my opinion on that. She’s amazing!

She smoked a LOT, and you can hear it in her voice-shame. And she was never Miss Innocence that she portrayed. She broke plenty of hearts, including Lindsey’s. But I do wish more women would adopt that hippie-gypsy look instead of the trash look.

Comments like yours are what sent her into hiding these last years you idot. Yes she did gain weight, but she still was beautiful and could still sing as well as ever. because of jerks like even heavier on the drugs through those years. I always found it amazing that the life she had lived in the past never showed on her face. Most rockers ( and especially female)do not age well I dont notice you dissing any of her beer bellied, falling down drunk, or drugged up male contempories. Stevie has been blessed for that NOT to happen to her. I for one ,am glad she seems happy again, and comfortable in both her looks and her life. We will hopefully be blessed to hear some more of her music. think about this statement as you age and look into the mirror. i wish i looked 1/2 as good as she does and im 63… so i remember when she went through the tough times because of men likie you.

Shadow? Stevie is a poetess. Lyrics extending from her poems are amongst all her songs back before Bella Donna. “The Lyrics by: Stevie Nicks” or attributed to: or with: are in Tom Petty’s works – Fleetwood Mac’s – Sheryl Crow – Macy Gray, etc.. She’s very much a proponent of musician’s getting their full share by supporting anti-piracy laws, “free” song downloads, etc.. She has a great deal at stake after all since writing a song get’s paid more than singing it. TOUR, TOUR, and TOUR! That’s where the money is if you’ve got a hit you didn’t write in any way.

Joe Walsh was my next door neighbor in Montecito for many years.Get honest!!

Stevie Nicks is the one celebrity who actually looks better as she ages. I generally never find the over 40 look attractive among women, but Stevie is past 60 and still looks more beautiful than most women in their 20′s. Remarkable.Far more importantly, though, she’s an incredible singer, musician, and songwriter; she doesn’t just write her own vocal melodies and lyrics, people don’t realize she writes a lot of the music (which takes arguably the most skill). Rhiannon and Landslide, for instance, two of Fleetwood Mac’s most iconic songs, owe their musical composition to Nicks as well as their lyrics.

Stevie was hot back in “the day”! I’m talking late 70′s, early 80′s. Have you seen the little vixen lately? Well…you could show a movie on her ass….wide-screen, too. But, then, it’s OK…..none of us look like our days of youth any longer! Stevie can still sing the siren’s song!

Happily it’s not a contest between the two. I’d love it if they did a duet together. Both are classic voices.

Stevie’s voice/in my opinion became EXTREMELY and increasingly “rough” after her ROCK A LITTLE tour in 1986, which was followed by her rehab at the Betty Ford Center…wherein she started to smoke cigarettes (as part of the center’s “therapy” from harder stuff. On her ecent IN YOUR DREAMS tour. Stevie spoke openly from the stage that she only/finally took singing/vocal lessons starting @1995. She sang the LEATHER and LACE duet with her travelling vocal coach and (again)/in my opinion has NEVER sounded better. She may have adjusted the keys of songs and KLNOWS not to reach for the ‘difficult’ notes…she is a PREMIUM performer at age 84!

Any person that has anything negative to say about Stevie’s voice must be either tone deaf or just has absolutely no ability to enjoy any kind of music, except maybe rap, which really isn’t music anyway!

Stevie was born May 26, 1948, which makes her 64 years old. She is still a beautiful woman with a beautiful soul. I’ve seen her perform 21 times since 1981 and she truly is bewitching.

I love the cover of one of her solo albums where she’s wearing a cape. I had to search for over a year until I found one. It wasn’t a lightweight, flowing one, but a heavy black wool one with a gold-colored, very unique clasp that resembles a pagan god. I still wear it; it’s perfect for New York winters not only for its warmth and resistance to rain and snow, but when I put the hood up I ALWAYS get a seat on the subway (along with the ones on either side of me!I also love Stevie in the Gypsy video, and of course, live any time. The woman doesn’t seem to age!

Every pitcher of Stevie is a classic. I’ve often wanted to ask Stevie if we met, which is her favorite. WE should admire a woman who chose not to use her sexuality as a selling point as most female singer have done one time or another in their careers.

While I appreciate your comment Bronwen, I don’t subscribe to any outdated stereotypical standards of conventional beauty. Beauty comes in all shapes and colors. Stevie Nicks’ look (both beauty and fashion) was emulated by the masses making her an icon and worthy to appear in this column.

I wouldn’t ascribe the word “beauty” with regard to Stevie Nicks. “Cute” in that button-nose, pixie Linda Rondstadt / Sally Field way – yes. But “beauty?” COME ON . . . save that for the Margaux Hemingway/Grace Kelly/ Peggy Lipton’s of the world.
