Nail stylists from CND showed off their Martha Stewart-worthy crafting skills at the Rachel Antonoff runway show by creating a sponge-painted navy nail that resembled a picturesque night sky. Roxanne Valinoti of CND says when it comes to nail art, creating a look like this—by layering various shades with a sponge to score a unique pattern and texture—is the easiest kind of art to do on your own nails. So we say make it your signature for fall 2012! It’s the perfect way to continue wearing the sparkly shades you're loving right now paired with cool weather-appropriate hues. Here's how to get the look.
Step 1: Apply a coat of navy blue cream polish (after applying a base coat, of course). They used CND Colour in Midnight Sapphire; we also like L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche Nail in After Hours.
Step 2: Using a wedge makeup sponge, dab the corner of the sponge on the brush of a vibrant purple hue (try CND Colour in Eclectic Purple or China Glaze Gothic Lolita). Gently dab the purple over the navy. Don't worry about making it perfect, just have fun with it and place the color where you want it.
Step 3: Using a different corner of the sponge, dab it in opaque white polish (try CND Colour in Studio White or Essie Nail Polish in Below the Belt) and randomly place it here and there on top of the navy and purple.
Step 4: Add stars to your night sky by sponging on a sparkly blue shimmer shade. They used: CND Nail Effects in Sapphire Sparkle.
Step 5: After letting the layers dry for a few minutes, finish by applying a quick dry top coat.
Van Gogh would be so proud.
