Backstage at BCBG: The New Classics

Trends schmends—at the early morning backstage for BCBG's Fall 2011 show yesterday, the focus was on the kind of pretty, incandescent makeup that's forever in style. "Ten years from now, people won't look at this makeup and say, 'What was that all about?'", said makeup artist Charlotte Willer of the luminous, natural tones she blended on models' skin. "It's just fresh and timeless." Which may sound like an oxymoron, but one glance at the finished face and you know exactly what she means. Working with Maybelline New York (Charlotte is their global makeup artist), she used a new fall shade of Eye Studio Color Plush Eye Shadow appropriately named Call Time, a mix of four shimmery nudes and browns (it launches in September—that's a shot of it being applied above). She brushed the white gold color on the lids and the sienna hue at the inner corners of the eyes and in the crease, dragging the color past the eyes' outer corners to the temples for subtle smokiness. She swept the brown shade under the eyes and didn't bother with liner or mascara because, as she explained, "We don't want anything heavy on the eyes—just a nice pearly glow." Charlotte continued to underplay it for the rest of the makeup, using Fit Me Foundation and Powder to give the skin a clean, satin-y finish and adding a soft glow to the apples of the cheeks with Pink Invitation, a petal-pink shade of a new baked blush that's launching in September (check it out in the pics directly above and below). For the lips, she dabbed on balm followed by Color Sensational Lipstick in Almost Nude (a fleshy hue out in September). In more sneak-peek news, I also had the chance to check out Charlotte's first collection for Maybelline, coming out in September (that's my not-so-professional iPhone pic below of some of the colors). The range includes four new Eye Studio Color Plush Shadow quads, the new baked blush, four new shades of Color Sensational Lipstick, two new Eye Studio Gel Eyeliners in indigo and dark emerald (you can't tell from this photo, but they're GORG) and eight new nail polishes which weren't yet on display. In person, these shades are so vibrant and cheerful that I wish they were launching for spring! But you can't rush perfection, so I guess we'll just have to wait for autumn to get our paws on these fun colors. Sigh.
