Backstage at DKNY: A Twinkle in the Eyes

Sparkly makeup is rarely described as "innocent"—but at yesterday's DKNY show, makeup artist Charlotte Willer found a way to make it look positively darling. With the rest of the face fresh and natural, Charlotte painted a dot of silver sparkle in the center of the eyelids close to the lash line—an effect that made the eyes literally twinkle on the runway. "DKNY is always about healthy-looking makeup," said Charlotte backstage. "We wanted to keep that idea but add a fun tweak. The dot of sparkle is playful and sweet, but the overall look still feels effortless." To create that effortless glow, Charlotte used a mix of products from Maybelline New York. She evened out the skin with Dream Liquid Mousse foundation—"It gives an airbrushed effect so the skin looks smooth but not matte," she said—and dusted Mineral Veil Powder where needed to nix shine. She swept the copper hue from the Eye Studio Eyeshadow palette in Copper Chic in the crease of the lids, dusted Mineral Powder Luminous Blush in Gentle Pink on the apples of the cheeks, and swiped Color Sensational Lipstain in In The Buff, a pinky-nude shade, on the mouth. She didn't bother with mascara or eyeliner to keep everything soft. And while those dots of sparkle looked innocent on the runway, Charlotte acknowledged that they might be a bit much for real life, so she suggests toning down the effect by wetting a small eye shadow brush and dabbing a shimmery champagne shadow (such as the one in Maybelline Eye Studio Eyeshadow palette in Copper Chic) on the center of your lids.
