New York Fashion Week: BCBG Max Azria
Design duo Max and Lubov Azria found inspiration for BCBG Max Azria’s fall 2013 ready-to-wear collection from graphic prints and textures they came across on a recent trip to Istanbul. But when it came to the beauty look, an effortlessly cool Kate Moss was on their minds.
To emulate Moss’s sultry, grungy sensibility, makeup artist Val Garland focused on flawless, luminized skin and chocolate smoky eyes. She began by pushing Sephora Jumbo Liner 12HR Wear Waterproof in 24 Dark Brown Matte across models’s lids and running the shimmery Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Bourbon into creases for a touch of radiance. With a dome-shaped blending brush, Garland diffused the color in creases and drew it up toward the brows for a gradient effect. Keeping the lower lash lines clean, she then brushed on multiple coats of Dior DiorShow Mascara in Chestnut 698 for lush fringe.
She achieved the perfect velvety skin with Stila Stay All Day Foundation and Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer Pencil, adding a touch of shine to cheekbones with a Josie Maran highlighter. For a slightly sunkissed effect, Garland sculpted the face using a powder brush to apply a bronze Stila Convertible Cream, which she says gives the skin a buffed texture. She rounded out the look with thoroughly quenched lips, courtesy of Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Whole Lotta Honey.
For hair, Laurent Philippon created a slightly unkempt texture for a bohemian ease. As a foundation, he sprayed a mix of Bumble and Bumble’s Thickening Hairspray and Surf Spray from root to tips while hair was damp for a matte, beachy effect. After lightly blow-drying models’s manes, he mussed up the top of the head until it fell in a natural, deep side part that he swept forward and off to one side. Philippon then used the new Bumble and Bumble Creme Contour for subtle texture. For the final touch, all models were topped with a beanie that sat slightly askew toward one eye.
Nails were left their natural, squoval shape and painted with a coat of OPI Nail Lacquer in Black Onyx. To give tips a semi-matte finish, a layer of OPI Matte Nail Envy Nail Strengthener topped the lacquer.
