A Beautiful Life: The Best of Bond Girl Beauty

We are sharing the tips, tricks and all the best there is to know about living your life beautifully. In this edition of the series, Makeup.com director of editorial Jennifer Hirshlag rounds up the top hair and makeup looks from five decades of James Bond movies and provides the secret intelligence to making them your own.
I grew up in the ‘70s and that might have meant different things to different members of Generation X. For myself, it meant I developed a fascination with secret agents in tandem with learning how to ride my bicycle. It wasn't, however, Maxwell Smart of Get Smart or Jacques Clousteau of the Pink Panther series or even Boris Badenov of The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show that purely held my attention. It was those formidable women who shared the screen with them—whether it was Get Smart's Agent 99, Capucine (the French fashion model who played Clousteau’s wife), or Badenov’s sidekick, Natasha Fatale.
Considering this, it’s been no surprise to me that I still get excited when I hear a new James Bond film is coming to theaters. I do look forward to watching 007 saving the world from whatever criminal mastermind has rankled the British Secret Service. It’s the women who end up enmeshed in his spy-scapades, however, whose every move I study. Where else can you learn how to look gorgeous in an updo and smoky eye while bringing a seven-foot henchman with metal teeth to justice? In honor of the release of Skyfall and the franchise’s fiftieth anniversary, here are some iconic Bond girl beauty looks I’ve loved and how to make them your own.
HONEY RYDER'S BATHING BEAUTY
Actress Ursula Andress set the whole concept of the Bond girl in motion in Dr. No when her character, Honey Ryder, emerged from the ocean in a hipster bikini accessorized only by a holstered knife.

Get the look: Make your cheekbones a force to be reckoned with by contouring them with bronzer and enhancing them with a smudged eye and wet-looking strands.
Try: Guerlain Terracotta Bronzing Powder for the face, Givenchy Shadow Show in Stylish Grey for the eyes and Redken All Soft Argan-6 Oil and Redken Forceful 23 Super Strength Finishing Spray for your strands.
PUSSY GALORE'S HIGH-FLYING GLAMOUR
Honor Blackman was just as well known for her trend-setting role in The Avengers as she was for her turn in Goldfinger as the cheekily named Pussy Galore, a private pilot who brings down her villainous smuggler boss.

Get the look: Do choose sides with asymmetrically parted strands paired with a luminescent makeup look.
Try: Nexxus Thermal Volume Heat Protection Mousse for hair, Lancôme Color Design Infinité 24HR Crease-Free Luminous Eye Shadow in Metallic Silver for lids, Chanel Le Crayon Khôl Intense Eye Pencil in Blanc for the waterline, YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils for lashes and Burberry Lip Mist in Nude Peach for lips.
SOLITAIRE'S EYE TOWARD THE FUTURE
In Live and Let Die, the soothsaying Solitaire (played by Jane Seymour) ends up predicting her own future upon meeting James Bond when she turns over a tarot card depicting two lovers.

Get the look: Appear mystical with an exaggerated metallic eye.
Try: Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre for arched brows, MAC Pigment in Old Gold for lids, Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Khaki for an exaggerated cat eye, Shu Uemura Liquid Glitter Eyeliner in Sparkling Gold for accents and Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal in Glam Black for coating top and bottom outside lashes.
MAYDAY'S KILLER LOOK
Grace Jones played the most ruthless Bond girl, MayDay, in A View to a Kill, with fierce hair and makeup to boot.

Get the look: Toughen up your angles with slick strands and color-saturated makeup.
Try: Kérastase Sublimateur Jour and Kérastase Double Force Controle Ultime hair spray (as Odile Gilbert did to update Jones’s New Wave look for Suno’s spring 2013 ready-to-wear show) for hair, Stila Convertible Color in Poppy for lids and cheeks, Benefit Cosmetics High Beam for highlighting browbones and cheekbones, L’Oréal Paris Infallible 24HR Eye Shadow in Eternal Black for rimming eyes, Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss in Blood Red for lips and Essie Nail Polish in A List for nails.
JINX IS A NATURAL
Halle Berry is among the modern-day Bond girls, who remained poised for action as Jinx in Die Another Day wearing more sporty and minimal makeup.

Get the look: Express your inner strength with glowing skin, a neutral eye and nude lip.
Try: YSL Le Teint Touche Éclat for a radiant complexion, L’Oréal Paris Studio Secrets Professional Eye Shadow Quads in Andie’s Neutral for eyes, Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush in Candy Coral for cheeks and Maybelline Color Sensational Pearls in Coral Gleam for lips.
VESPER LYND'S HIGH-STAKES MAKEUP
Eva Green plays Casino Royale’s Vesper Lynd, an agent with a secret motive who is assigned to keep an eye on the way Bond spends his M16 funds.

Get the look: Up the ante with an intense smoky eye.
Try: MAC Shade & Smoke Shadow/Liner in Little Miss Moffet and Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Eyeshadow Quad in Maestro for the waterline and lids, Dior Diorshow Blackout Mascara for velvety lashes, MAC Powder Blush in Desert Rose for cheeks and Giorgio Armani Rouge d’Armani Lipstick in 101 for lips.
