Hot Off The Runway: Fall Makeup Trends

We love hearing from our panel of beauty pros about the latest and greatest beauty tricks. Today, we're lucky enough to hear from Los Angeles-based makeup pro Emily Oliver on the hottest fall makeup trends we saw on the runways of New York Fashion Week.

Fall Makeup Trends

Despite the fact that spring hasn't even sprung yet, all anyone can talk about is fall fashion and beauty trends, thanks to New York Fashion Week. And this month, NYFW felt like a throwback to our school days. Old school looks were revolutionized into modern and exquisite takes on beauty. Here is a breakdown of some of my favorite looks from fashion week that can easily be implemented into your everyday routine!

The Goth Girl

The Runway Look: The “subtle goth look” on the runway featured a minimalist face with strategic placement of a key accent color (black -duh).

How to Wear It: Line the inner rims of the eyes with a black liner and apply a hint of black lip gloss or lipstick. Ditch the blush and instead opt for a taupe contour powder on the hollows of the cheeks. If you’re not comfortable with a full-blown goth look, start with either the liner or black lipstick (on their own), and build it out based on your comfort level.

Product Recommendations: Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Black Eye Pencil in Perversion; NYX Highlight and Contour Powder

The Party Girl

The Runway Look: The “party girl” look includes clumpy mascara that delivers spiky, spidery lashes; glossy lids and lips (shine is back!).

How to Wear It:  Apply a glossy, shiny shadow to the eyelids as well a minimum of three generous coats of mascara for that “out-all-night” look. If you don’t want full-shine makeup, feel free to either play up the lips or lids.

Product Recommendations: Maybelline Volum’ Express Pumped Up! Colossal Waterproof Mascara in Classic Black; Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Midnight Cowboy; YSL Gloss Volupté

The Natural Gal

The Runway Look: “No-makeup makeup” is the goal here.  Striking the perfect balance of dewy and matte this soft, radiant look hit the runway in a big way. Key components for this style include a “lit-from-within” glow of blush, natural, filled-in brows and barely there lip color to keep the focus on the skin.

How to Wear It: While less is more, this tutorial will make going natural a sinch! Don’t forget to prep properly with glow-enhancing skincare products.

The Glitter Queen

The Runway Look: This disco-ball-inspired look features geometrically shaped glitter on the temples, eyes and/or upper cheekbones. Lips were left neutral or with the tiniest bit of pink to best showcase the glitter.

How to Wear It: Apply a glitter eyeliner to line the upper lash line or dust a glittery eye shadow on the lid, and rock it out with confidence!

Product Recommendations: Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal Glitter Eyeliner in Midnight Cowboy; Maybelline Baby Lips in Pink Punch

The Ice Princess

The Runway Look: Demi-matte skin, frosted blushed cheeks, and white accents on the tips of the lashes gave an impression of a beautiful fairy coming in from the cold.

How to Wear It: For this look, try a white eyeliner, or if you’re feeling bold, white mascara on the bottom lashes. This will make the eyes look bigger, and lend an ethereal edge to the overall look.

Product Recommendations: YSL Le Teint Touché Éclat; Maybelline Dream Lumi Touch Highlighting Concealer

The Cheerleader

The Runway Look: Neon blue winged eyeliner, pink cheeks and lips screamed “energy” and took a modern spin on the vibrant and flashy cheerleaders of yesteryear. Lashes were lightly coated with mascara in an effort to keep the focus on the neon blue liner.

How to Wear It: Time to invest in neon eyeliner! If blue isn’t your jam, swap it out for a bright purple or green! For a more subtle approach, instead of lining the whole eye, try just the top lid, or even just the waterline. Swipe on a little mascara to top off the style and make it an “everyday look.”

Product Recommendations: NYX Vivid Brights in Vivid Sapphire; Urban Decay Naked Flushed
