Award Season ‘09: The Golden Globes

The first major award show went off without too much of a hitch in Los Angeles yesterday, as Hollywood’s A-list hit the red carpet for the 2009 Golden Globes.

Given the economic state of the world, many actresses opted to keep their dresses and makeup very pared down and simple — bright, bold colors did not make a sweeping appearance on the carpet (save for Eva Longoria in orange and Cameron Diaz in bubblegum pink). It seems that light nudes (Demi Moore, Vanessa Hudgens, Penelope Cruz, Elizabeth Banks) and white (Sandra Bullock, Kate Beckinsale) were popular shade choice for the evening’s events.

Here are some of the nights hits…

Demi Moore. Does this woman not age?

Kate Winslet. She only gets more beautiful as the years go by.

Freida Pinto. The Slumdog Millionaire stars looked ravishing in Dior.

Angelina Jolie. Enough said.

Penelope Cruz. This Spanish spitfire always makes Best Dresses lists.

Tina Fey. The funny woman was uncharacteristically glamorous in Roberto Cavalli and her no-makeup makeup.

Elizabeth Banks. Can you say classic American beauty?

Sandra Bullock. When she dresses up, she dresses up nice.

Vanessa Hudgens. Her fresh and youthful makeup was a great choice because it didn’t overshadow her gorgeous features.

Evan Rachel Wood. Now that she’s split from Marilyn Manson, her goth phase has passeth. Thank the stars for that. Instead of black, her hair is now a fiery red and that ghostly pallow she’s been sporting is now a normal, human tone.

Olivia Wilde. Picking feminine shades for makeup was a good match for her Reem Acra.

Kate Beckinsale. As always, this British brunette is flawless.

And misses..

Renee Zellweger. That hair needed to go, and fast!

Drew Barrymore. See the above comment and apply.

All in all, there weren’t very many impressive looks out on the red carpet, but somehow it feels like a reflection of everyone’s state of mind: keep it simple and non-ostentatious.

Unless, of course, they’re bringing out the big guns for the Oscars.
