The biggest show, year after year, is no doubt Marc Jacobs.
Fashion elite waited hours in past seasons for Jacobs’ runway presentations in a stifling hot venue just to see what the talented Mr. Jacobs had to offer the sartorial world, because somehow he always instinctively ahead of the trend game.
This season, the man kilt-loving designer started early and ended early — the whole thing lasted eight minutes to be exact, unfortunately leaving some well-heeled editors on the outside looking in, missing out on the nouveau collection.
For Fall ‘09, Jacobs brought the 80s back. All of it.
Stephen Sprouse, Day-Glo, big shoulders, mohawks, bold eye shadow, ridiculously large square sunglasses, pouf dresses. You name it, Jacobs referenced it.
I absolutely loved seeing both the bright and dark Boy George-esque makeup on the models, from Jessica Stam to Sessilee Lopez to Alana Zimmer to Kim Noorda to Heidi Mount to Raquel Zimmermann to Olga Sherer to Amanda Laine to Han Jin. There were yellows, blues, reds, pinks, dark moss shades thrown into the mix, but one thing was for certain: the eye shadow and eyeliner was all in full 80s excess (in a good way).
Models’ hairdos were slicked, mohawked and teased within an inch of their lives, too — let’s not even try to guess how many cans of Salon Selectives hairspray the stylists went through.
It all made me want to throw on some serious Wham! and George Michael. With maybe a side of Spandau Ballet.
