Black Monday 2008 may be the largest online sales day in internet history
The busiest online holiday shopping days of 2008, better known as Black Friday, Cyber Friday, Black Monday, or Cyber Monday, (yes confusing) are almost upon us and not a moment too soon. Cyber Monday 2008 may turn out to be the largest online sales day in internet history despite the ailing U.S. economy and the latest R curse word – ‘Recession’, as retailers including ToysRUs don’t want to be stuck with excess inventory at the end of the year.
What’s the Difference Between Black Friday (Cyber Friday) AND Black Monday (Cyber Monday)?
Black Friday is traditionally the busiest day of sales in the U.S. for brick and mortar stores. According to Wikipedia, consumers would return to their offices the Monday following the Black Friday weekend and make purchases online that they were not able to make in stores.
In 2008, many traditional brick-and-mortar stores have realized the power of the internet and have created an online presence. Cyber Monday allows these stores to slash their prices exclusively online during a 24-48 hour period.
Weighing the Pros and Cons of Shopping In-Store vs. Ordering Online
As the economy has slowed, as have spending habits of customers. The average consumer on the internet is spending more time performing price comparisons prior to ordering. They are also weighing the pros and cons of shopping in-store vs. ordering online.
Shopping in-store costs money in terms of fuel and the time it takes to wait in lines, although shopping in-store provides the added benefit of physically touching and feeling a product prior to purchase. On the other hand, a consumer shopping online has the benefit of easier price comparisons, in-store pick-up (in many cases) and the ability to research a product through multiple user reviews. If a customer is simply wanting to replenish an item and can wait a week to have the product shipped – shopping online and taking advantage of Black Friday and Black Monday sales are definitely the best way to save money.
What to Expect For Black Monday 2008
In the upcoming weeks, expect to receive Cyber Monday and Black Monday promotional deals in your email inbox. Traditional brick and mortar store flyers, including BestBuy.com will draw consumers to their respective websites where exclusive online sales, free shipping offers and limited quantity only promotions will be made available. Be sure to wake up early on the morning of November 28th, 2008 to take advantage of ‘door crasher’ specials at your local brick and mortar store locations. You’ll want to stay up past midnight on December 1, 2008 however, as many websites automatically make deals available the first minute of Cyber Monday.
Some websites have everyday low pricing on certain products or verticals. One site provides everyday savings of up to 70% on authentic fragrances, perfumes and colognes!

Hi,
Great post and excellent research. I think that Cyber Monday may outdo Black Friday this year (even though it was only created a few years ago).

Great post! As an online retailer (handcrafted jewelry), the Black Friday through Cyber Monday weekend has been really good to me! My sales are definitely up compared to last year. I think it’s true that people are spending more time shopping around online because of the flagging economy.
