Dark Circles, Be Gone

Dark circles under the eye are telltale signs that you either had a big night out with the girls, been inflicted with random bouts of insomnia, stayed up late watching back-to-back DVD episodes of Dexter or inherited a rather unfortunate aesthetic hereditary trait from the fam.

The bad news is you can’t erase dark under eye circles from existence, despite beauty products here, there and everywhere saying they can do it for you. And even worse news is they tend to get more prominent with age, as the delicate skin under the eyes gets thinner and blood vessels get more visible.

The good news is you can hide dark circles with the right products and foolproof technique.

So here’s how to hide them well:

1. Pick a concealer that’s one-and-a-half shades lighter than your skin tone. I — as well as most star makeup artists and beauty editors out there — really adore Yves Saint Laurent’s Touche Eclat Radiant Touch for the job, because not only does it conceal just right, it’s take-away pen brush is friendly enough for the modern nomad.

2. Hydrate the delicate skin under your eye with a good eye cream, to avoid making the concealer too cakey. Try Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado — it moisturizes and brightens the area, as well.

3. If you’re a foundation user, apply concealer apres-foundation because it’ll double up the concealing effect.

4. Using a concealer brush is key, if you decided not to go with YSL’s Touche Eclat with its built-in brush. A concealer brush means better control and coverage. In case a concealer brush isn’t something you have in your makeup case, a ring finger works does a pretty good job, too.

5. To make sure those circles are nicely behind a product facade, brush on some light-diffusing BeneFit Cosmetics’ Powderflage. You can used Powderflage on its own or over makeup.

6. Somethings we tend to go overboard when there’s a beauty crisis, like popping a pimple before its time and, thus, exacerbating the problem. Don’t do it! Remember too much concealer spotlights the problem rather than hides it, which defeats the purpose.

So maybe you can watch that extra episode of Dexter at 1 am, after all.
