Fall ‘09 Nails: Brown Town

Matching shoes, clothes and handbags is a no-no when it comes to style. It’s just as huge a no-no to match eye shadow with lipstick and nail polish.

What isn’t forbidden, however, is to match makeup colors with the season, as in pairing up your nail color this Fall ‘09 with the autumnal palette outside. This means when tree leaves leaves morph into brown and flutter slowly to earth, brushing that same color onto nails is the perfect manicure homage to a season of scarves, warm coats, crisp air and pumpkin spiced lattes.

Deborah Lippmann’s new collection covers both ends of fall’s brown palette. Maneater is a dark chocolate espresso color that is under a shade away from the current goth trend seeping its way into makeup and runway collections. Instead, it ends up being like indulging in a bar of Lindt’s semi-sweet dark chocolate or glass of iced americano, only without the calories. The limited-edition Superstar is a flashy, glam, sparkly copper reminiscent of glittering fall sunsets — it’s an instantaneous segue into the inevitable metallics of the fall/holiday sartorial seasons. Picture Santogold or M.I.A. rocking this one.

Essie’s new Tomboy No More falls in the middle of Deborah Lippmann’s Maneater and Superstar, a milk chocolate brown that will play against the jewel tones and silks of a Lanvin or Zac Posen. The Porto D’Oro Lip & Nail Cocktail Set from Tini Beauty contains a deep Port polish with complementary lipstick and gloss, making nail primping jobs quick, painless and aesthetically-effective.

Brown is apparently the new black this Fall ‘09.

Brown can be a tough choice depending on your skin tone and the warmth or coolness of the shade chosen. Everything old is new again.

I would love to wear brown, but it never looks quite right on me. I guess I have to try many shades…

I love the idea of brown. I have a hard time using red or going as dark as black, so I think brown would be just right.
