Fashion Files: New York Fashion Week, Fall ‘09

Dust off your YSL Tributes or — if you’re lucky (or a magazine editor) — get used to tottering around for twelve hours (and more) straight in your new Nicholas Kirkwoods.

New York Fashion Week — running from February 13 to February 20 — is almost here.

Despite the constant doom and gloom, the shuttering of stores and labels from coast to coast and the constant stream of discouraging industry news, New York Fashion Week is still forging ahead, albeit with a little less pomp and circumstance than seasons previous. Well-known labels are turning away from runway presentations to more intimate (read: less costly) presentations at smaller venues and showrooms, while up-and-coming labels and their respective designers are doing presentations together.

So who will be showing their Fall ‘09 collections at Bryant Park tents this year?

Yigal Azrouel, Charlotte Ronson, BCBG Maz Azria, Nicole Miller, Erin Fetherston, Diane von Furstenburg, Lela Rose, Herve Leger by Max Azria, Miss Sixty, Carolina Herrera, William Rast, Carlos Miele, Matthew Williamson, Dennis Basso, Diesel, Michael Kor, J. Mendel, Anna Sui, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Alexandre Herchcovitch, Ports 1961, Zac Posen, Christian Siriano, Brian Reyes and Nanette Lepore.

Those opting to do presentations off-site include Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.

It’ll be interesting to see how pared down both setting and atmosphere will be at this round of Fashion Weeks, and if it this pared down feeling will be reflected in makeup and clothes. Barneys fashion director, Julie Gilhart, is skipping out on London Fashion Week for Fall ‘09, a piece of news that will surely depress many rising UK designers. Alexander Wang and Marc Jacobs even cancelled their famous after-parties, another piece of news that has surely depressed the fashion cognoscenti already.

Or maybe this trimming of excess is a giant blessing in disguise.

Perhaps the emphasis will finally turn back to the clothes — and after all, isn’t that Fashion Week is all about?

Stayed tuned to All Made Up for more FW coverage in the coming weeks!
