Macy’s Goes Green

Macy’s is going the way of green, eight brands at a time, with the launch of their store-in-a-store concept Beautiful Planet at their location in Herald Square.

With people turning to eco-consciousness as a lifestyle rather than a passing trends, Beautiful Planet is giving consumers the choice of using natural, paraben-free beauty products that work just as well as other Sephora or luxe department store brands. Even the decor itself is green-minded and sustainable: bamboo, recycled metals, low VOC paints and coconut shell tiles. Each brand comes with a description printed on post-consumer recycled paper, as well.

The Beautiful Planet roster includes Burt’s Bees, Care by Stella McCartney, Farmaesthetics, Nvey Eco, Organic Apoteke, Pangea Organics, Origins and Terre d’Oc from France.

Macy’s plans on adding a total of 18 more shops by the end of next year.

Are you beginning to forgo the usual brands for ones with all-natural ingredients?

I have mixed feelings about Macy’s venture into the green world–yes, it’s good that they will be carrying products that may be better for people’s health and the environment than most cosmetic lines (although many still contain ingredients that are questionable or downright hazardous); but isn’t this just another case of green washing? I mean, how meaningful is it if they’re carrying organic cosmetics while in the next department they’re selling clothing that is not fair trade or sweat shop free??
