Q&A With: Chad Hayduk of Three Custom Color Specialists

All Made Up had the chance to lock down a few minutes with Chad Hayduk, co-founder of New York-based cosmetics line, Three Custom Color Specialists.

Q: How did you get started in makeup artistry?

CH: I have loved makeup since I was a kid.  One of my favorite toys was my “Hugo: Man of a Thousand Faces!”  It’s sort of a Barbie head for boys.  You can glue all sorts of eerie things like scars, cuts and warts to his face.  I was always fascinated with monster makeup and got my start studying special effects makeup for film and theatre.

Q: As a long-established makeup artist, what stars, magazines or design houses are on your client roster?

CH: We have designed everything from film to theatre to editorial to television.  All of it is so much fun, but I’d say working with Disney on Broadway has best utilized our creative skills. We have designed for the musicals Mary Poppins and Aida and for actors such Angelina Jolie, Toni Collette, Sofia Coppola and Jessica Biel.  We have also created signature color for magazines such as Good Housekeeping and Lucky.

Q: Tell us about the philosophy behind your product line, Three Custom Color Specialists.

CH: We believe that women can wear all color — we just want to steer them in the right direction.  With our unique Custom Blending services, we can create ANY color.  We have made many women very happy by recreating their favorite discontinued shades, especially in lipstick.  We are here to embrace all women.  Our Ready to Wear line is based on the concept of the color wheel, where we have divided colors into warm and cool undertones. We only used tried and true ingredients and no fragrance, so even the most sensitive skins can use our products.

Q: What’s does the next year look like for you?

CH: Very busy as usual.  We have lots of interesting projects that we are working on.  Can’t say anything just yet, but I will be first to let Makeup.com know!  Travel is also in the cards.  We find it very inspiring; in fact, we recently made collections based on our trips to Seychelles and Russia.

Q: What excites you most about what you do as a career? And what thus far has been your favorite work project?

CH: I LOVE making people feel better about themselves.  That one little trick can do wonders.  My favorite projects have been my most recent film work.  I have made many friends and have been inspired by their talent, hard work and creativity.  Recently I have completed four movies, including the award-winning A Four Letter Word and Between Love and Goodbye.  Two more to come this year as well!

Q: Any good horror stories to share?

CH: Well, we have seen some very interesting shades that clients have wanted us to match — green, shimmery, full-coverage lipstick, anyone?!  Let’s just say people have sent us some very interesting things as reference points, like tree bark and a few things that shall remain unmentionable.

Q: If you could give one person a good makeup makeover, who would it be?

CH: Katie Couric. Enough said…

Q: Spring ’09 is coming up fast. What beauty trends to you think will be big for the new season?

CH: Our favorite beauty trend for this season is the bronze goddess look at Donna Karan, Milly, Juan Carlos Obando and Carlos Miele.  Inspired by this sexy look, we created Whisper, a creamy shimmering nude with fine flecks of gold and bronze, which is available in both our award-winning sheer lipstick formula and creamy lip gloss (a makeup artist favorite).  Used with our Mood Lighting Shimmer Trio, anyone can be a bronzed goddess!

Q: Name the top five products or tools you can’t live without.

CH: Three Custom Color Specialists’s Concealer/Foundation and Translucent Powder, Mascara, Clarifier and my hands!

Q: Any mottos – style or otherwise – that you live by?

CH: To quote my favorite movie, Auntie Mame: “Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!”
