The French are a sophisticated bunch, no doubt, so there’s really no wonder the chic-est looking manicure is named after them.
Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria, Katie Holmes and Reese Witherspoon — all of whom have been seen around Hollywoodland with the telltale white tips — would rather a French manicure than the latest neon yellow shade from Essie.
Here’s a step-by-step on how to keep your nails classy:
1. Using a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover, take off any old nail polish. Wash hands and soak in warm water for a few moments.
2. With an orangewood stick, gently push back the cuticles so they are all even with each other.
3. With a nail file, shape your nails evenly into a desired shape (ie. rounded or square).
4. With a steady surgeon’s hand, carefully paint only the tip of each nail with a white hue — if you’re concerned about messing up, use sticky nail guides from your local drugstore. Depending on the polish, you might need a second coat. Allow polish to dry between coats.
5. Using a nude or very light pink color, paint the entire nail once the tips have dried. A second coat may be necessary. Allow nails to dry thoroughly.
6. Once all the coats have dried, apply a clear topcoat to protect your new French manicure.
As the French would say, bonne chance!
