What’s the best way for a beauty-obsessed girl to spend a dreary, rainy early Saturday afternoon?
In the company of Jennifer Ho, a west coast member of Benefit Cosmetics’ makeup artist roster, naturally.
I arrived at my 1 pm appointment feeling bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to be made glamourous by Jennifer and her arsenal of Benefit goodies. After sitting down in the high chair, she informed me that the brand has actually been around for 30 years, a piece of trivia not known by most.
Benefit is insistent of keeping makeup fun, clearly evidenced by the very cute, pretty packaging and tongue-in-cheek (or is that chic?) product monikers. Jennifer informed me what the brand likes to do is “solve every day beauty dilemmas”, so heavy eye shadow and bright, bright lips aren’t on the cosmetic menu each day of the week.

The annual November chill wreaks havoc on all things: your hair, boots, skin, clothes and attitude in general.
After all, no one likes nights that roll in at 4 pm — and no one likes torrential downpours that equate frizz and frazzle.
I suppose the two bright spots in November are Thanksgiving long weekends and the excuse to really start jotting down a wish list of things you wouldn’t mind finding under your tree for the holidays.
Here is a little wish list of top five beauty products that will keep you pretty right into the New Year and will make it a very happy holiday, indeed.

Reese Witherspoon is America’s Sweetheart — and, boy, did she ever look elegantly sweet in at the recent Country Music Awards.
I got the chance to speak to Lyle Remier, a makeup artist for M.A.C. (and co-designer of the clothing label Evan & Dean), about how to replicate Witherspoon’s enviable CMA look.

Celebrity designers are a bit old hat these days, whether it be a celeb launching their own line (like Fetish by Eve) or a celeb teaming up with an already-established label (Rachel Bilson with DNKY).
A road a little less traveled is the celebrity makeup line — the only ones I can think of off the bat are Mary Kate and Ashley for Claire’s Accessories and Stuff by Hilary Duff for mass retailers (think Wal-Mart and JC Penney).
Leave it to model, supermom, television host, skivvies schiller and branding machine Heidi Klum to team up with long-time employer Victoria’s Secret for “The Heidi Klum Collection” for the brand’s Very Sexy Makeup line, the new collection which she debuted at the Grove in Los Angeles last week.

Esteban Cortezar is a busy, busy boy lately.
The prodigious designer was recently tapped to be creative director at Emanuel Ungaro, delivering two commendable collections for the Parisian couture fashion house thus far.

The Republican-Democratic battle for the presidential heat has gotten significantly more heated since Republican nominee Senator John McCain brought on Alaskan governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.
As a result, Palin has turned up the Republican campaign’s star wattage, steadily building a legion of fans called “Palinistas” (an obvious take on the word “fashionistas”), as well as spawning wigs and glasses made to her likeness.
Eva Longoria is, besides your resident Desperate Housewife, one of the beautiful girls of Hollywood.
For red carpet events, she often prefers dramatic eyes with lush lashes and pale, pretty lips — I have yet to see her don a bright shade of rouge lipstick instead of a pearly gloss. At this year’s Emmy Awards, Longoria stuck to the dark mascara and black eyeliner, though her makeup artists did add a tinge of green along her bottom lashes for a sibliminal effect. As per usual, her Ton Parker-smooching lips were pared down.

TGI and F.
Friday is the call of heels (Dior), nights on the town (scenester lounge) and, naturally, cocktails to go along with it (pomegranate).
It also means tucking away the massive slouchy hobo that carries most of your life’s belongings on a daily basis and whipping out a credit card-sized clutch because it “goes” with your outfit. This begs the question: Where can you get a night’s beauty essentials small enough to fit in such a space-limited bag?
Liptini Mini Bar to the serious rescue, my friends.

As they say, the more is always merrier.
In consumer-speak, “the more” means extra product, perks, functions or results. Cosmetics companies understand regular folk are short of time (24 hours = not enough), space (more money, less room for new shoebox apartments downtown) and patience (directly related to lack of time plus space). Thank the beauty gods, because more of them are focusing on two-in-one innovations that give to relief — and added functionality — to all three.

Proenza Schouler went from safari last spring to 80s power woman this coming Spring ‘09, going a tough gal route in big shoulders and high-waisted pants.
The thing about this power woman is that she wasn’t androgynous; she was still sexy, feminine and vampy as ever, and this feeling was probably a result of the red lips models sported down the runway of Jack and Lazaro. I’m really noticing that for Spring ‘09 most designers and makeup artists are agreeing that the thing to do is highlight one part of the face, whether it be eyes or lips, while keeping everything else clean and minimal.
