Happy Valentine’s Day to all my friends at Makeup.com!
One of the most frequently asked questions I get is, “How do I pick the perfect red lipstick for my skin tone?”
Well, since its Valentine’s Day (and it’s a red-hot trend), let me give you a few tips.
First of all, we need to determine if your skin tone is warm or cool.
If you are WARM, you are going to have more golden or yellow tones to the skin, gold jewelry looks most natural on you and you tend to get a golden tan when you go into the sun. The veins at your inner wrist will appear green at the surface of the skin.
Warm complexions should look for reds with orange or brick tones and, if you like shimmer, with a bit of gold or bronze. Think of the red colors in a fire — these colors will look most natural on you. Try Three Custom Color Specialists Warm Red Lipstick or Hot Blooded Lip Gloss. For definition, pair it with Warm Red Lip Liner. Avoid any pink-reds or blue reds. These colors will be opposite of your coloring and will appear quite dramatic against your skin.
If you are COOL, you are going to have more pink or rosy tones to the skin, silver jewelry looks most natural on you and you tend to burn right away when you go in the sun. The veins at your inner wrist will appear blue at the surface of the skin.
Cool complexions should look for reds with more pink, burgundy or blue-red tones and, if you like shimmer, with a bit of silver, opal or white shimmer. Think of rich, jewel tones like ruby and garnet. These colors will look most natural on you. Try Three Custom Color Specialists Cool Red (if you are a fair to medium skin tone) or Cool Burgundy Lipstick (if you are a medium to deep skin tone.) For definition, try Cool Red or Burgundy Lip Liner. Avoid orange reds or any golden reds, as these colors will be opposite of your coloring and appear quite dramatic against your skin. For a gloss, try Candy Apple Lip Gloss — the name says it all!
If full coverage lipsticks are not what you are looking for, try blotting them down and using them more like a stain. Gloss is another great options as they are sheer and will blend in with your natural lip color. They are more forgiving and a great way to experiment with reds.
