All Bob, No Weave

Yesterday night, I attended an event thrown by a fabulous publicist friend of mine, who recently cropped her hair into a bob just at ear length, a la Yves Saint Laurent Fall ‘08.

Despite the shift in weather, chic women in major fashion cities are taking a cue from the Victoria Beckhams, Rihannas and Katie Holmes of the world, shearing their long locks into short styles. The bob, over the years, has morphed from the single, straight cut of yesteryear into a myriad of styles to suit different personalities and comfort levels:

1. The severe, long bob. Think Gwyneth Paltrow, making her reappearance into the limelight this summer with Iron Man.

2. The angled bob. This means Victoria Beckham, pre-Fashion Week this past September and before the pixie cut that has divided style critics.

3. The shaggy bob. This would be Katie Holmes, shortly after becoming BFFs with a newly-Americanized Victoria Beckham.

4. The long, layered bob or the “swing bob”. Think Anne Hathaway, rising from the romance ashes post-Rafaello Follieri.

If you’re too afraid to take it all off, remember that a modern bob doesn’t come below the shoulders, rather just grazes the collarbone at its longest.

Baby steps, ladies, baby steps.

I would love to try the severe, long bob like Gwyneth Paltrow has. Her hair texture looks similar to mine so it would probably turn out okay on me. I don’t think I am brave enough to get a shorter bob like Posh Spice, though.
