BOD BEHIND THE BRAND
bod's therapeutic skincare range is currently available in over 250 stores within Australia, and is distributed to 30 countries around the world, including the UK, Europe Germany, USA, Japan, Honk Kong, Taiwan, Korea and New Zealand. Yet it all began nine years ago in Bondi, following a bad case of burnout.
Therapeutic practitioner Brett Pattinson once led a considerably less holistic lifestyle as the frontman for internationally renowned ska band The Allniters ~ as much a description of their lifestyle choices as a name for the group.
Now a homeopath, Tai Chi Master and shiatsu specialist, Brett could once be found singing lead vocals on such hits as 'Monetego Bay', which reached number two in the Australian charts in 1984, 'Breakfast in Bed', which UB40 covered with Chrissie Hynde and 'Love and Affection', the title track from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie Secrets of the Ooze.
Never an industry famed for its health-giving properties, over 10 years of endless touring and countless 'allniters' left Brett with a severe case of burnout. Conventional medicine had little to offer him on the road to recovery, so he turned his attentions to natural therapies.
Brett enrolled at Nature Care College (Australia's leading centre for the study of natural therapies) where he spent four years studying shiatsu, aromatherapy and naturopathy. He was twice awarded Student of the Year, and even travelled to Japan, where shiatsu originated, to further develop his understanding of the practice. He continues to lecture in shiatsu and tai chi at the prestigious college, and is the youngest person to have been offered such a position.
After graduating, Brett ran a successful therapeutics centre. After years of hands-on work, he began developing the skincare products that form the basis of the hugely successful bod range. Brett realised that, just as real beauty comes from within, when it comes to formulating products it's what's inside the bottle that counts. His commitment to creating products free from harmful ingredients and filled with goodness remains the driving force behind bod. From sourcing the finest ingredients available to his involvement in the research and development of the organics industry, Brett has rigorously maintained his belief-driven focus and continues to ensure that bod's products contain only the highest quality ingredients, carefully selected for their therapeutic qualities. Several products in the bod range are now registered as certified organic, with more to follow soon.
His time with The Allniters behind him, sleepless nights of a different kind came with the arrival of Brett's son Lenin Alexander. Nicknamed bubbaloo, he was quick to capture the hearts of his devoted parents. Brett and his wife Lorena Sigala (herself a high honours graduate in naturopathy) went to great lengths to find products worthy of bubbaloo's beautiful little bottom, before realising they were just going to have to make them themselves. Wanting only the best for their beloved baby boy Brett and Lorena developed bod for bubs, a range of baby products packed with all the goodness and therapeutic benefits you'd expect founder of bod to shower on his new addition. The range has proved to be just as popular as the main skincare range, and continues to go from strength to strength.
Bod is now thriving. Sold extensively both in Australia and overseas, the company has been listed on the Australian ASX since November 2006. The bubbaloo family continue to lead a busy, fruitful life. Brett remains heavily involved in the continued development of bod's product range and is planning to complete a book on the industry later in the year. He even manages to slip in the odd Allniters gig (recently supporting UB40 for the Austral-asian leg of their Homegrown world tour), though early nighters are more a lot more typical these days.
