Pinterest of the Week: The Braided Bun
If you can’t get enough of Pinterest and wish you had more time to find the best beauty looks on the photo-sharing site, this column is for you. Each week we highlight a coveted hairstyle, makeup technique or nail design with a popular following, and get the tips and tricks for creating it from the person behind the original pin. For this edition we tracked down Manuela Barrera to learn how to make this braided bun.
Creating versatile hairstyles that are easy for anyone to replicate is Join the Mood blogger Manuela Barrera’s mission. Here she shares the steps it takes to create this braided bun—complete with a homemade bow.
Step 1: Using a teasing brush or comb, backcomb your hair on the upper crown of your head—just behind your bangs, if you have them. This will add volume and create a more lived-in look.
Step 2: Using your hands, pull your hair into a high ponytail and secure it with a wide elastic. Tip: Slide a couple bobby pins around the elastic to help prevent your ponytail from slipping, says Barrera.
Step 3: Loosen the hair at the top of your head a bit to add a touch more volume.
Step 4: Split your ponytail into two equal sections and braid each. Secure the braids with small, clear elastics.
Step 5: Pull the braids apart to loosen them slightly for a more casual finish.
Step 6: Wrap one of the braids around the ponytail holder to create a bun shape. Secure it with bobby pins.
Step 7: Wrap the second braid in the opposite direction to create a bun shape. Secure it with bobby pins.
Step 8: Spritz your braided bun with a medium-hold hair spray to make it last. Try: Matrix Vavoom ShapeMaker Medium-Hold Hairspray.
Step 9: Finish off the style by clipping on a bow just below your bun. Learn how to make a bow similar to Barrera’s by checking out her tutorial.
