A Beautiful Life: The Ladies in Red
We are sharing the tips, tricks and all the best there is to know about living your life beautifully. In this edition of the series, Jane Marie of the Beauty Squad rounds up those celebrities who are famous for their red lips.
When it comes to red lipstick, women fall into two camps: those who wouldn’t dare try it and those who wouldn’t dare go without it. If the following roundup of ladies who are known for wearing a signature scarlet teaches you anything, it’s that red lipstick devotees come in every imaginable incarnation. First up? Like you didn’t this one coming.
It is often written that Marilyn achieved her signature lip look with five coats of Guerlain Rouge Diabolique, which sounds just awful. That is too much lipstick! Luckily, there are now shades that cover in fewer coats. I suggest creating her look with my personal favorite of all red lipsticks, Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited in Deep Rich Red. It’s a classic, old-fashioned red color that matches many skin tones and manages to have an eggshell sheen, somewhere between matte and gloss.
Lucy set the standard for redheads who can pull of red lipstick. I mean, you just can’t even picture her in your head without that gleaming, overdrawn smile. Before I Love Lucy fame, she had a modeling job with one of the most popular makeup brands of the early twentieth century, Max Factor. Here she is in a very early advertisement and here (above) she is looking more like we’ve all come to remember her. Clear Red, the shade she’s wearing, is no longer made by Max Factor. For a close match, try Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor in Very Cherry.
This lady takes that blonde bombshell look and turns it on its head. In the recent video for “Settle Down,” she wears L’Oréal Paris Infallible 8HR Le Gloss in Red Fatale. It’s electric!
DITA VON TEESE
Oh, Dita, just teach us how to BE. She made an attempt at just that in 2010 in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, when a reporter asked:
You signature red lipstick – who is it by?
I have a hundred tubes of red lipstick. Today I’m wearing one of my ultimate favourites, which is called Rouge Bingo by Dior.
That other popular MAC shade, Russian Red, just JUMPS off Anne Hathaways’ face in The Devil Wears Prada. According to this article, another option is Maybelline Color Sensational Lipcolor in Red Revival.
Scarlett’s lips are perfect and they just get more perfect with a bright color on top. Here she is modeling Dolce & Gabbana Classic Cream Lipstick in Fire.
And finally, for a vampier red that is oh so in this winter, check out Kristen in Lancôme L’Absolu Rouge in Rouge Velour. Now if only we could get her into wearing blush more often?
