Julianne Kaye is the makeup artist behind the gorgeous looks worn by celebrities including Britney Spears, Diane Kruger, Kelly Osbourne and Kate Hudson. Kaye recently gave us an exclusive look inside her covetable travel case and shared her background and must-have favorites while we were poking around.

Being a makeup artist was destiny for me. I grew up in Hollywood with two very talented parents in an environment that encouraged creativity. My father, a well-known British hairstylist, had coiffed the likes of Rita Hayworth, Diana Ross and Peggy Moffitt. My mother was an award-winning clothing designer. Always into art but not knowing how to make a living with it, I met someone when I was 20 years old who suggested I go to makeup school to harness my talent. I worked really hard and climbed my way up the ranks, and within five years I was painting the face of a young up-and-coming talent by the name of Britney Spears. That’s when my entire life changed.

I’ve cultivated a unique smoky eye that’s been called “the Jules stamp” by many of my clients and it’s one of those special looks I create that is signature to me. I really enjoy sharing my tricks of the trade because I believe every woman deserves the right to be beautiful. Here are some of my makeup essentials that I have in my kit to help get you there:

YSL Matt Touch Primer: One of my all-time favorite primers is this Yves Saint Laurent one. It’s an on-set must-have for me. As long as you apply this primer, your skin will stay nice and matte all day. Seriously! I never have to powder anyone on set. Not only does it help you stay matte, but it also smoothes and refines the skin’s texture for a flawless, radiant complexion.

Giorgio Armani Designer Shaping Cream Foundation SPF 20: This foundation is beyond amazing. It’s like a second skin. Its silk fibers contour the skin while the oils smooth it, causing the face to have a beautifully luminous finish. It’s also great for all skin types, making it my go-to foundation.

NARS Duo Eyeshadow: These are my favorite eye shadows. They come with two complementary shades, so you get more bang for your buck. They are long-wearing and crease-resistant, and do not disappoint on the pigment punch! My favorite duo? Surabaya. This reddish and golden brown duo is everything.

Maybelline Eye Studio Master Precise Ink Pen Eyeliner: Want to create that perfect cat liner or add some serious definition to your lash line? Then you have got to try this ink pen. It is incredible and affordable. It has a felt tip that allows the product to never dry or skip, and its ultrathin brush makes drawing any line a breeze.

YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils: This is my go-to mascara. It creates intense and luxurious lashes with one swoop. The best color is the burgundy shade, #5. It makes any eye color pop and complements any eye shadow, whether you’re going for a natural eye or a sultry smoky eye. I think this mascara is well worth its weight in gold.

Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage: The best way to cover and conceal is by using Laura Mercier’s concealer. It uses a unique two-shade system. One shade is to match the skin’s undertone and the other is to match its depth. It makes it easy to match your exact skin tone. Also, if you want to conceal undereye circles, finish this concealer off with Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder. It doesn’t settle in the fine lines that happen near the eye area and it delivers a soft, weightless finish.

BeautyBlender: The best way to achieve a flawless face is by using high-quality tools. I always reach for my BeautyBlender when perfecting any canvas. It is the first ergonomically designed nondisposable applicator that allows me to create an infallible complexion. That’s because the spherical shape of the BeautyBlender allows foundation to be applied seamlessly.

Stila Convertible Color: When I want my client to have beautiful glowing cheeks, I grab these Stila blushes. The formula is nongreasy, creamy and sheer, and allows the cheeks to stay radiant and look natural. What I most love about these babies is that they can be used for lipstick, as well, which makes them great for touch-up purposes since you have your cheek and lip color in one. This also makes them perfect for on-the-go looks.

Girlactik Sparkle Eyeliner Single: Everyone needs a little sparkle in their lives, right? I know I do! Whether I’m creating a beautiful shimmery eye or outrageous glitter lips, I always turn to these sparkle singles. I also love layering these over gel eyeliners to kick up winged eyes.

Fresh Sugar Lip Polish: You can’t create a perfect lip without a perfect surface. This lip scrub is a staple in my kit. It uses real brown sugar crystals to gently buff away dry flakes. To keep in the moisture, it packs oils of meadowfoam, jojoba seed and grape seed, as well as shea butter. After you scrub this on, your lips will be ready to hold any lipstick color flawlessly.
