Get Pretty for a Cozy Date Night
Contributor Jordan Reid shares her beauty and style know-how to get you prepped for those seasonal events and special occasions in which you want to put your best look forward.
Right around this time of year, I stop wanting to leave the house. Like, ever.
While I’m definitely the kind of girl who enjoys a good night out on the town, when the thermostat drops below 30 degrees it’s time to hunker down with a fantastic home-cooked meal (click here to browse all my favorite recipes), a truly terrible horror movie (because those are the best kind) and a very special someone.
A cozy date night is all about candles. It’s about wine. It’s about brownies made from a box and eaten straight from the pan. Those kinds of things. But just because date night takes place at chez vous doesn’t mean that you should throw on a pair of sweats and call it a day. The key for when your evening is more about sweetness than swank: Go for an easy, relaxed look that’s comfortable—but still cute enough to make romance the last course on the menu.
When you’re staying in for the evening, it’s all about natural glamour. Keep the focus on your eyes by applying liner to your upper lids. Try: L’Oréal Paris Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner in Earthen Rock Brown for a smoky—but still subtle—effect. Then add major lashes with Lancôme Hypnôse Doll Lashes in So Black!, which lifts and thickens every single lash for a flirty, dramatic look.
Now is not the time for red lipstick. Instead go for kissably soft lips by lightly applying a glossy balm with a hint of color. Try: Clinique Almost Lipstick in Luscious Honey, a sheer strawberry that easily goes from sweet to sexy depending on how heavily it’s applied.
Finish by adding a little shimmer to your brow bones and the inner corners of your eyes with L’Oréal Paris Magic Lumi Highlighter. The subtle sparkle will pick up the candlelight and give you a gorgeous glow.
For your locks, try an easy side bun, like the one I’m wearing in the photo on the upper right.
To get the look, blow-dry hair using a round brush and smooth strands with a couple of drops of anti-frizz serum. Then sweep hair to one side and secure it loosely with a clear elastic (don’t pull the ends all the way through, so you get a looped bun rather than a side ponytail).
Do pull out a couple of pieces around your face to give the look softness, and add staying power with a light misting of hair spray.
See what I’m wearing in my photo? That’s nothing more than a simple black tank and draped camel cardigan, but it looks (and feels) a little more luxe than my regular at-home pieces because of the sumptuous fabrics. Go for shapes that you’re comfortable in, but choose ones in cashmere, silk or even soft cotton jersey. Anything that feels delicious next to your and your date’s skin will do the trick.
Now go light some candles and get cozy.
