Flawless Face: How To Contour & Highlight Your Face
Flawless skin and a skillfully sculpted face is not only a red carpet requirement, but it’s also a makeup must in the fashion world. Technique is everything when contouring the face and knowing where to apply the appropriate makeup is key. That’s why we’ve asked makeup mastermind Afton Williams (LA-based makeup artist) to weigh in on the topic of creating a contoured face. According to Williams, “The first step to creating a sculpted face, is knowing where to contour. It’s the one thing you can add to your daily routine that will make a huge difference.” With Afton’s expert help, we put together the easy-to-follow contouring diagram pictured above. What products should I use?
Putting the correct products to use is just as important as the placement itself. In terms of finding the right makeup for your coloring and needs, Afton suggests the following…
Bronzer should enhance your complexion so pick something that compliments the natural pigments in your skin. If you have warm undertones, opt for something with a peach base. If you have cooler undertones, pick an earth-colored bronzer.
Pro Tip: Look for multi-use palettes such as Lancôme’s Blush Subtil Palette. It includes a highlighter, blush, and a contouring shade. Otherwise, try NYC Color Wheel Mosaic Pressed Powder, which Afton uses for many of her bronzing and contouring needs.
If you have a cool skin tone, go with a highlighter that is both light and iridescent. If you have a warmer skin tone—stick with a highlighter with a warmer undertone.
Pro Tip: Use a highlighting brush to apply highlighter for the sheerest coverage. Try the Sephora Collection I.T. Highlighting Fan Brush.
Pinch your cheeks and take note of the color they turn right after—whatever shade of rouge you see should be reminiscent of the blush you decide to use. Otherwise, go with an apricot shade or a rosy hue as these are universally flattering colors.
Contouring your face correctly enhances your natural bone structure, giving you a defined yet natural finish that’s ideal for any outing. If you follow this contouring guide you will be well on your way to a runway (or red carpet) ready look in no time!
