FOUNDATION: The right color. The right formula. FOUNDATION: The right color. The right formula.
A good foundation provides a perfect palette for your makeup, helps conceal wrinkles and imperfections, and protects your skin from dust and pollution. Today's foundations have come a long way, and most are packed with added benefits like vitamins, moisturizers, and SPF protection. Unfortunately, with the vast array of different types of foundation available to us, choosing one that is right for your unique skin can be confusing. So, how do you know what type of foundation is the one for you? It doesn't have to be that hard! Just follow these simple tips from the makeup.com experts and get a perfect, flawless finish every time.
The right color.
There are few things more unattractive than a face caked with foundation, or worse yet, a woman whose face is an entirely different shade than her neck! Foundation should not be used to change the color of your face, but is designed to provide a smooth canvas on which to apply your makeup. This said, when choosing your foundation shade, you must find one that exactly matches the color of your skin. It should blend in seamlessly with a completely natural look.

If possible, test your foundation in a naturally lit setting (even if you have to take a mirror and walk to a doorway or outside). Select a few that you think are closest to your coloring and apply the foundation in dabs along your jaw line (not on your wrist or hand). Check to see that it matches both the color of your face and your neck. Most times, foundations with a yellow undertone will be best, unless you are very fair. In this case you should choose a foundation with a pink undertone. The right shade will be the one that you can't see because it blends in so well.

The right formula.
Consider your skin type and your coverage goal. When it comes to foundation, your skin type will often dictate which formulation is right. Different brands of foundation offer sheer to heavy coverage with matte to satin finishes. So, it depends on your coverage goal. If you are going to work you may choose a daytime sheer coverage, or if you have a black gown event you may want a heavier coverage that will hold your evening makeup well.

Normal Skin
The normal skin is the luckiest as it can easily handle all sorts of foundations ranging from powder, cream-to-powder, liquid, tinted moisturizers, matte, or dewy formulas.

Normal/Combination Skin
For combination skin, a liquid or cream-to-powder foundation with a natural finish looks best. Those products are usually marked "skin balancing" which means that they have moisturizers and are oil free at the same time.

Oily Skin
If you have oily skin, stick with an oil-free, liquid or powder foundation with matte finish to minimize the shine. These products are usually marked "oil control". Before applying foundation, apply an oil-free primer with a damp wedge sponge to create an even canvas. Use a matte, oil-free foundation that's labeled "non-comedogenic" and "won't clog pores". Choose a regular cream concealer and use a loose powder (since they have fewer oils than pressed). Avoid illuminating formula foundations and pressed powders. Remove any shine throughout the day with oil-blotting papers.

Dry Skin
If you have drier skin, select a creamier formula with a dewy finish that offers moisturizing benefits and soft gleam. These products are usually marked "moisturizing". Choose a créme or mousse foundation. Avoid matte, oil-free formulas and loose powder, which can settle in fine lines.

Sensitive Skin
For Sensitive Skin, you need to select makeup especially made for sensitive skin which are usually oil-free, fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and allergy tested for skin irritancy. Choose a liquid foundation with silicone or a natural mineral foundation. Look for labels that are specific to sensitive skin and contain key phrases such as "non-allergenic" and "fragrance-free".
