Get the Look: Red, White, and New at Viktor & Rolf
You didn't expect the standard smoky eyes-nude lips combo from the design duo that once sent models down the runway wearing fencing masks, did you? Though Viktor & Rolf has moved beyond the quirky runway antics that made them notorious years ago, their show is still anything but predictable—and that goes for the beauty as well. For their spring '11 collection in Paris this week, the designers took a classic evening look—slicked-backed hair, flushed cheeks, cherry red lips, and thick streaks of winged liquid eyeliner—and gave it their signature twist by doing the liner in bright white instead of black. Which sounds kooky, but there's something rather pure and beautiful about the look, don't you think? I'm not suggesting you show up to work tomorrow in this makeup, but the white on the eyes lightens the mood of this formal look and gives it a springlike feel. (Kind of like how the designers' best-selling fragrance, Flowerbomb, is somehow both sweet and sultry at the same time.)
For real life, take things down a notch by drawing just a thin line of white eye pencil along your top lash line, without winging it past the eye (try The Body Shop Eye Definer in White). If even that feels too graphic for you, do a sheer wash of shimmery white shadow on your lids instead (but if you have olive or dark skin, go with an off-white or taupe shimmer shadow, since pure white can look ashy). A few good options are Maybelline New York Expert Wear Eye Shadow in Vanilla (white), Linen (off-white), or Silken Taupe. To add those healthy pink cheeks and bright crimson lips, try Yves Saint Laurent Blush Variation in No. 2 Pink Bloom and Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge Lipcolor in Absolute Rouge. Voilà—a rich evening makeup look without a stitch of heavy black.
