Runway Beauty: Marc by Marc's Smudgy Eyes

The look of lived-in makeup is a definite “do” for spring—at least if Dick Page has a say. At Marc by Marc Jacobs, the makeup artist made skin appear luminous and practically bare—all the better to support a statement eye that’s a dark mix of sandy beige and black. "It’s all a little bit greasy and mucky,” he explains. “The idea is ‘leftover’ makeup. It’s not meant to last all day, but the hope is you’ve been out for awhile by the time it appears this way.” And though he swears the look “can’t be too pretty,” we’re dying to re-create it. Here are the steps to putting it together on your own.
Step 1: Apply foundation only where needed. Page says to “keep the coverage as light as possible,” so your natural skin shows through. Try: Maybelline Dream Fresh BB 8-in-1 Beauty Balm Skin Perfector.
Step 2: Create a soft golden highlight on your upper cheek area and under your eyes. Try: Shiseido Luminizing Satin Face Color in Soft Beam Gold.
Step 3: Using your fingers, Page says to lightly tap a rose lipstick hue into the lips to accentuate their natural tone. Keep the color application slightly imperfect. Try: Lancôme L’Absolu Nu Replenishing & Enhancing Lipcolor in Blushed Rose.
Step 4: For what Page calls a “semi-punk, tough” eye, begin with a layer of sparkling brown cream shadow. Apply it with a brush staring at your lash lines, while blending and diffusing it up to the creases. Try: Shu Uemura Creamy Eye Shadow Definer in Pearl Brown.
Step 5: Create further definition by brushing black cream shadow deep into your lash lines, on the tops and bottoms, blending as you go. Page notes that you want to add extra weight to your upper lash lines near the outer edges of your eyes, and that color along the lower lash lines should be applied in an imprecise manner. Try: Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in Caviar.
Step 6: Coat your top lashes only with a heavy helping of mascara. Try: YSL Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils Waterproof in Charcoal Black.
Step 7: Finish the lived-in eye by “mucking up” the color, as Page says, with a layer of clear lip balm, applied at the center of your eyelids and along the lower lash lines. Try: Shiseido Benefiance Full Correction Lip Treatment.
