March Madness: 4 Winning Spring Makeup Looks

With so many pretty new beauty trends to choose from this spring, the ball’s in your court when it comes to scoring a gorgeous new you. Place your bets on these four fabulous looks created by San Fran makeup pro Emily Kate Warren,  and you're guaranteed to be a winner.

Dramatic Cheek

“I love putting the strongest hit of color right in the center of the cheek,” says Warren. Try her unusual tactic, which sounds a bit backward, but makes your face come alive with color, even if you’re not wearing any other makeup. First, apply your usual foundation, concealer, or powder to prep the skin. Then, add a hint of bronzer across the cheekbones and bridge of your nose. Now, take a fluffy blush brush and use it to apply a cream-to-powder blush like Smashbox Cream Cheek Trio in In Lights over the bronzer (stay away from gel since it will look streaky). Use a dry makeup sponge to buff out any strong edges so that the pop of color blends seamlessly into your skin. The radiant result? A warm bronzed complexion with a bright, happy cheek.

Modern Cat Eye

This spring’s most purr-fect eye is all about strong, bold lines. Start by applying soft black liner most heavily at the outer corners, then use a clean, flat brush to spread the color along the upper lash line and fade it out so it seems to disappear into the inner corner of the eye. Go heavy on mascara (like L’Oreal Voluminous False Fibers Lashes Mascara in Black) for extra drama, and make sure to apply it to the entire lash by starting as close to the lash as possible and shimmying your way up. “For a more graphic line, use liquid liner on the lash line, making sure there are no gaps. You shouldn’t see any skin between lashes and line.” Try Prestige Liquid Eyeliner in Black.

Technicolor Lips

The freshest way to wear saturated, bold color is to keep it au naturel (well, as natural as you can make bright red or juicy orange). Since the effect shouldn’t be meticulous or overdone, spend your prep time on turning your lips into a smooth canvas that’s ready to receive color by using a toothbrush to slough off flakes. For an undone-but-done look, “go rogue and skip liner unless you’re using a chubby pencil that doubles as a liner,” says Warren. “Apply most of the color in the center of your mouth, then press and roll your lips until the color disperses, creating an outer boundary that’s soft and reaches out to your lip line.”  Try Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Very Cherry.

Softly-Lit Skin

Beauty is all about the unexpected, and the most of-the-moment way to look fresh-faced is by smoothing a hint of highlighter (like YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch) onto often-neglected places to create a candlelit glow. “Smooth it on the bridge of your nose, on that little indentation between your eyes,” says Warren. “And on the tip of your nose, brow bones, and the very tip of your chin for a dewy finish that looks believable and healthy.”
