Michelle Phan's Simple, Chic Holiday Makeup Look

For those of you who follow Michelle Phan's YouTube channel (which I'm assuming is just about everyone since her channel currently has over 280 million views), you've seen the video makeup artist transform herself into everyone from Lady to Catwoman via the magic of cosmetics. But Michelle also knows that sometimes, a girl just wants to look pretty for the party—without committing to a makeup overhaul. So when she stopped by my office today for a quick catch up while she's in New York, I took the opportunity to grill her about holiday makeup—specifically, how to look dazzling with as little effort as possible (which is the look I tend to favor). Here's what Michelle recommends for a five-minute makeover. 1. Go for the gold—and the plum. "A mix of gold and purple on the eyes is festive but in an understated way," says Michelle, adding that the colors look great on every skin tone. "Dab a shimmery gold shadow on the inner corners of your eyes and sweep it about a third of the way in on your top lids. Then brush a matte plum eye shadow on the outer third of the lids, winging it slightly out past the eye. The mix of contrasting textures makes the look more interesting than if you just used two shimmer or two matte colors. Also, gold on the inner corners reflects light and makes your eyes look bigger. If you want to kick up the glamour more, dust a shimmery plum shadow on the center of your lids." "Black mascara with the gold shadow can look a little tacky," says Michelle, "so use brown instead for a more elegant finish. Right after you apply the mascara, while your lashes are still wet, rub your fingertip in a shimmery charcoal shadow and pat it along your lashes. This will add just a touch of sparkle, but not so much that it looks over the top." "A rosy lip gloss with golden shimmer is sexy yet low key," says Michelle. "And since your eyes and lips are glistening, your cheeks should be matte. Create a soft flush with a rosy powder dusted along your cheekbones." "If even the above look is too effort much for you, just do a wash of sheer gold powder shadow all over your lids and pile on brown mascara on both your top and bottom lashes to create the illusion of thicker lash lines," says Michelle. "Pat a red stain on your lips, and you're good to go!"
