The beauty icon: Penélope Cruz
Her signature look: Femininity on fire. Her acting career took off in the early '90s and gained momentum internationally when she began appearing in filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar's quirky dramas. Her Spanish heritage, golden skin, long brunette locks, finely boned features, sultry brown eyes, alluring wide smile and petite curvy figure have broken down beauty boundaries on the big screen.
Her style legacy: A modern-day Sophia Loren. Cruz is equally stunning in her downtime uniform of jeans, a top and a blazer, as she is on the red carpet, where she looks every bit the Old Hollywood bombshell in gowns from designers including Versace, Giorgio Armani, Marchesa and Chanel.
Her "it" moment: The 81st Academy Awards. With side-swept bangs, an updo, dark-rimmed eyes, peach lips and a white strapless floor-length vintage Pierre Balmain gown, Cruz accepted the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She was the first Spanish actress to win an Academy Award. She asked onstage, “Has anyone ever fainted here?”
Her now moment: The 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. Cruz turned heads on the red carpet at the world premiere of her new movie, Twice Born. The 38-year-old wife of actor Javier Bardem and mother of 21-month-old Leonardo wore a deep side-part and an even deeper side-slit on a pale pink draped Versace gown.
Her beauty booty:

  • For the face, look to replicate Cruz’s healthy and natural complexion with a sheer foundation in your exact skin match. Try: Giorgio Armani Maestro Foundation.
  • Cruz’s beauty look is all about the eyes. To brighten and open deep-set eyes, opt for light neutral shades on the lids. Try: L’Oréal Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in Endless Pearl. To create subtle depth, dust a taupe or light to medium brown powder shadow into the creases and blend. Then apply a touch more to the outer corners only for added dimension. Try: Maybelline ExpertWear Eyeshadow Singles in Earthy Taupe. To enhance the almond shape of the eyes, glide liquid or gel black liner along the upper lash lines from the inner to outer corners, building intensity (via the thickness of the line) as you work your way to the outer corners. Try: Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink. Continue by running, then smudging, a creamy black pencil liner, like L’Oréal Extra-Intense Liquid Pencil Eyeliner in Black, along the bottom lash lines. To make the eyes pop, be certain the upper and lower eyeliner meet at the inner and outer corners. Finish the eyes with full fringe. Apply a strip of falsies or layer on several coats of YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Shocking in Deep Black.
  • For lips, go with a simple wash of plum rose. Try: Clinique Colour Surge Butter Shine Lipstick in Berry Blush.
Straight from her lips: “I ate an In-N-Out burger and then I went to the red carpet. What's so surprising about that?”
