Love Fest: The Perfect Valentine’s Day Manicure

Here at MDC, we're always on the lookout for top-of-the-line beauty gurus to share advice on hair, makeup and skin care. Today, we are thrilled to have nail expert Kait Mosh share her unique ideas on how to get a super-festive Valentine’s Day mani. Take it away Kait!

Valentine's Day is for lovers — nail art lovers, that is. It's the only time of year kisses and hearts are fully acceptable (in my opinion), and the combination of pink and red is on almost every girl's nails. My love right now is the new Valentino Winter 2014/2015 bag collection, which features an amazing color palette and chevron design reminiscent of the ‘70s. I took some inspiration from the bags, threw a little love in there and came up with a design you can try at home! Enjoy!

Step 1: Start with clean, manicured hands. Wipe nails down with alcohol or acetone to free the nail bed of any dirt or oil.

Step 2: Pick a nail to serve as an accent and apply base coat.

Step 3: While the base coat is drying, take white polish and paint a thin line down the middle of the remaining non-accent nails (as pictured) with a small nail art brush. These lines will serve as guides as you design the rest of your nail art.

Step 4:  While the white lines dry, go back to your accent nails and paint on two coats of the soft pink polish.

Step 5: With your small nail art brush, start your chevron design pattern at the bottom of the nail by drawing two adjacent triangles. Continue to build your pattern as shown, using your Valentine’s color palette. I find it easier to design one half of the nail first, then build on the second half.

Step 6: For the KISS accent nails: Take a small amount of your red polish and paint lips at the edge of the nail using a small nail art brush. For the LOVE accent nails:: Take a small amount of red polish and freehand write the word 'love.' Then, take a bobby pin or dotting tool and make dainty white polka dots around the word.

Step 7:  Allow three to five minutes for your accent nails to dry. Finish the design with quick-dry top coat.
