Q. My perfume seems to wear off very quickly after I put it on. What can I do to make it last longer?
A. Layering helps extend the scent of your fragrance. Applying a layer of lotion or cream prior to wearing your fragrance will help prolong the wear of your favorite scent. This can be either the cream or lotion that matches your fragrance, or an unscented cream or lotion. Also remember that you may not be able to smell the perfume because your nose has gotten use to it but that others still can.
Q. I've heard people refer to "notes" when talking about perfume. What does that mean?
A. Perfumes have three layers of scent, referred to as "top notes", "middle notes", and "base notes". What you smell immediately after applying the perfume is the top note. It gives your first impression, but is also very volatile and fades quickly. For several minutes to an hour after applying perfume, you can smell the middle note. After thirty minutes, you smell the base note. It blends with the middle note to provide the main theme of the perfume. The base note is the richer smell.
Q. How do I pick a good perfume for me?
A. First, find what kind of scent most appeals to you. Then, test perfumes to see what smells good on you. Test a few fragrances on paper. If you find one or two you like, apply them to your skin, one on the back of each hand. Then waitÂ…not necessarily at the perfume counter. Go shopping. Grab a latte. Then check the perfumes and see if you still like them. Scents change over time relative to your body chemistry. What smells good on your friend may not smell as nice on you. And something that smells good on you now may not smell good two hours later. Once you've given the perfumes a chance to mingle with your body chemistry, select which perfume is right for you.
