Q. How do I choose the right foundation for my skin color?
A. The foundation you choose should be one that matches your natural skin color. You want the foundation to almost disappear on your skin because it matches that exactly. Test the color along your jaw line just apply a little and blend it in. It should look as though it disappeared.
Q. My eyes are very small. Is there something I can do to make them look wider?
A. First I would recommend that you use a natural shade such as brown eyeliner to line your eyes and do not apply eyeliner on the inner rim of the eyes. Another helpful tip would be to use a white eyeliner pencil and fill in the bottom inner rim. As for eye shadows try and stay away from dark matte colors. Instead try using light more natural colors the have a slight shimmer to them.
Q. What is the best makeup for oily skin that won't cause me to break out?
A. Try Alison Raffaele Reality Base Foundation. It is mineral oil free therefore it would not clog pores and provides medium/full coverage.
Q. What are the best colors for me to use? I have red hair with blonde and brown streaks and lots of freckles.
A. Without actually seeing you in person, I would have to suggest that you use natural colors, like browns, blacks, grays, Vanilla, and even mossy greens. If you can get to a cosmetic counter at your local department store I would suggest that you test out different shades of red lipstick that suit you best. Red lips are making a come back this season.
Q. How do I conceal dark circles under my eyes?
A. The trick to concealing darkness under the eyes is to use a concealer with a yellow to orange undertone; depending on how dark the circles are. Two of the best concealers out there right now are theBalm - timeBalm Anti-Wrinkle Concealer and Too Faced - Herbal Eye Concealer. This product actually contains ingredients to help prevent and correct darkness under the eye.
Q. I don't know what color eyeliner to use. I have blue-green eyes and platinum blonde hair and I've tried both a navy eyeliner and a gray. I want something that will play up my eyes, but won't look so, "made-up" (which is sometimes what I think the navy does).
A. A cool shade of brown eyeliner would suit you beautifully! Cool brown brings out your blue-green eyes and at the same time, very subtle to match your hair color therefore it is perfect for you to use day or night. I would encourage that you stay away from reddish brown pencils as it will make your eyes look bloodshot/tired.
Q. What is the liquid foundation meant for?
A. Foundation is meant to cover and even out your skin tone on your face. It is meant to act like a second skin. It can cover any imperfections and create an illusion of flawless skin.
Q. What color goes best with brown eyes for eye shadow?
A. Brown is a neutral color and therefore can be used with almost any color. Because your eyes are brown you are not limited to particular colors. Your skin tone may be a factor depending on how light/dark you are. If you are fair try to stay away from dark or very bright colors. If you are tanned you may want to try brighter more vibrant colors.
Q. How do you put on eyeliner so it won't make your eyes look smaller?
A. Try using cake eyeliner or eye shadow in black, brown, or grey instead of the regular pencil eyeliner. To apply cake eyeliner/eye shadow as an eyeliner you need to use an angled/brow liner brush and place it as close to/in to your lash line as possible. Once you become use to using an angled brush it will become your favorite/must have tool in your makeup case.
Q. Should concealer be used under or over foundation?
A. It is a personal preference as to whether you apply your concealer before or after foundation, but most make-up artists would tell you that they apply it after the foundation has been applied. This way you can see what is needs to be covered, that you have the right color, and are not applying more makeup than is necessary. After you have applied both your foundation and concealer you should set it using powder to keep your makeup in place all day and give you skin a finished look.
Q. Is there an easier way to put my eyeliner on my top lid without always messing up and having to start over?
A. Try using powder cake liner with a small thin angled brush. If you make a mistake it is ok because it is a powder and therefore will easily come off. I would suggest using a liquid eyeliner after to make the liner more dramatic and bold.
Q. My favorite liquid foundation has been discontinued. I have a couple of bottles that I bought once I found out it was going out of stock. How should I store these to make sure they last until I'm ready to start using them?
A. Do not open them and keep them in a dry cool place. They should last a couple years that way.
Q. I have an oval face with chubby cheeks. How do I apply blush to make my face look less chubby?
A. First, it is important to own a good quality Blush brush. A blush brush will help to place and blend the blush perfectly. Next, pick a color that looks natural on you and then apply it to the apples of your cheeks blending up along you check bones. To create even more depth to your cheeks try applying contour (a darker color) starting at your jaw bone joint and blending in a downward motion to the cheeks center. /tools-2391/round-blush-brush/, /tools-2391/angled-blush-brush/, /brands/too-faced-cosmetics/flushed-blush/
Q. I am 40 years old and currently wearing orthodontic braces (the less obvious ceramic kind). What makeup tricks can I use to detract attention away from my lips and mouth, and emphasis my eyes instead? I have fair skin, light ash-brown hair and steel blue-gray eyes.
A. You will want to wear a natural or nude lip. Try and stay away form and dark or bright colors on your lips and instead use more color to define the eyes. This will cause your eyes to be the focus rather that your mouth. A very popular look right now is the Smoky eye. The smoky eye look is dark and rich mysterious colors with a very plain or nude lip. I have provided a link below to an article providing step by step instruction on how to apply the smoky eye. I think you will find this very helpful. /fall-tricks-20060918/
Q. Who was the first person to make make-up?
A. I believe it was the Egyptians. Actually makeup was first created to prevent bugs from flying into people's eyes and then later was developed into enhancing one's beauty. Think Cleopatra!
Q. For some reason my eyelashes wont curl anymore. When I was younger, they curled beautifully. Any suggestions?
A. Perhaps you need to try a heated eyelash curler. Blinc's Heated Lash Curler can curl very short lashes with out damaging them. It sounds like your lashes just need a little extra help. Here is a link for more information: /brands/blinc/heated-lash-curler/
Q. I want to find cute, pretty, and cool ways to do my eye shadows but I don't know what to do or how to do it. Can you help?
A. One of the easiest way to achieve a very cute look is to use a combination of eye shadows and eye liner. Depending on your eye color, you would want to follow the chart below to find the most suitable eye shadow. You can use this guide for eye liners as well.
Blue Eyes - Too Faced Duo Eye Shadow in Full Frontal $17.00 , Avanya Eye Shadow in Bronze $12.00, Three Custom Color Eyeshadow Singles in Warm Nutmeg $19.50
Brown Eyes - Too Faced Single Eye Shadow in Pearl Necklace $16.00, Lola Cosmetics Silky Eye Shadows in Fatigue $18.00, theBalm shadyLady Eyeshadow in Sexy Stacy $15.00
Green Eyes - Alison Raffaele Soft Shadow Powder Eye Shadows in Amethyst $19.50, theBalm shadyLady Eyeshadow in Caught in the Act Courtney $15.00, Jilda Beverly Hills Silky Duos Eyeshadow
TECHNIQUE: Apply eye shadow all over lower lid and stop at the crease. Apply pencil on top of eye shadow and remember to not drag it too far out. In order to create a 'cute and funky' eyes makeup look, aim for roundness with a slight cat-eye effect with your liner.
Q. Are all bronzers used with foundation unless it says not to?
A. Bronzers can be used with or without foundation. It really depends on the end results you are trying to achieve. Wearing bronzer alone will give you a very natural, sun-kissed look. I suggest trying bronzer with and without foundation so that you can see the different result. Both techniques would work just fine!
Q. What if I think I'm ugly and want to be prettier?
A. First of all, confidence is the strongest attribute to being beautiful. When you feel good about yourself, your inner beauty will naturally shine through. You should also find out what you don't like about yourself and ask yourself why? Our society is filled with the 'idealistic' images of Hollywood and female are constantly expose to this images via magazines and television. Please bear in mind these glamorous actresses also have personalize hairstylist and make-up artist working on them. If you want to enhance your looks, I would suggest reading a make-up tip book for basic application tips and technique. Lola Make-up Tips Book
Q. I'm 43 and starting to show the signs of aging. What is the best foundation to use that will minimize lines but still have good coverage for age spots?
A. I would suggest a light texture foundation with good coverage. Both of these formulas wear comfortably throughout the day and are oil-free as well. Lola Cosmetics Oil-Free Créme Foundation Duos, and Alison Raffaele Reality Base Foundation
Q. Help! Sometimes my eyelashes clump together. What can I do?
A. Most people experience this problem when there is debris on the mascara wand. A quick and simple tip is to wipe down your mascara wand with paper towel. Once the debris (left over and dried up mascara) has been removed, you'll notice a much cleaner application.
Q. Can you suggest a foundation that would have excellent coverage that has staying power and doesn't look too thick? Also, what is the way to prevent and/or cover a slight yellowish skin tone?
A. I would suggest Lola Oil-free Duo Foundation, $35. It comes in a variety of shades and this formula wears comfortably all day with excellent coverage. Please click on the link below to view: /brands/lola-cosmetics/oil-free-crme-foundation-duos/ A light dusting of powder will help neutralize yellowish skin tone. My favorite is: Lola Pressed Powder in French Pink $27.50.
Q. I need more definition in my face. Should I use a bronzer or darker blush?
A. Try applying the bronzer on your cheek bones. Think of were the sun naturally tans your face. Apply a darker blush under your cheek bones and a little on the apples of your cheeks for definition.
Q. I regularly use a sunscreen but since my skin is already a bit oily, after applying sunscreen it leaves an oily look on my face. Please help!
A. Try using blotting tissue. I love the Alison Raffaele's Blotting Tissue.
Q. Hello, I am a woman in my 40's and have acne scars on my cheeks. I have yet to find a foundation or blush that works for me. After a few hours my face looks like a grease pit! Any suggestions?
A. If you have oily skin make sure you are using a daily cleansing regime designed for oily skin. You should be using a lightweight moisturizer, nothing too thick or heavy. Before you put your foundation on try using a foundation primer. Primers will help to apply you foundation evenly as well help to hold your foundation in place. Next you want to make sure you are using an oil free liquid foundation or try a powder foundation such as Avanya Mineral Foundation. Last, set you foundation in place using a powder foundation.
Q. I need a make up that has hypoallergenic occlusiveis I'm saying this right. What do you recommend? A. If you are looking for a very good quality makeup that is hypoallergenic then I would recommend you try AVANYA - Natural Mineral Cosmetics. This brand has excellent pigments, very good coverage and unlike most mineral makeup it does not make your face look ashy and gray. Here is a link to there full line of products. They have some very nice colors in their eye shadows as well./brands/avanya/
Q. After I put on my makeup and I look in the mirror I can tell I have makeup on because it looks cakey and flakey. How can I get a smooth, fresh face without looking too made up?
A. To obtain flawless looking foundation you need to start with good skincare regime. Try a daily exfoliating cleanser. This will keep your skin looking bright and fresh. Follow it with a moisturizer best suited for your skin type (I.E. normal, oily, dry or combination). A good skincare regime will make a huge difference in the way your makeup will look on your face. Next you will want to use a foundation primer before applying your foundation. This will help keep your makeup in place all day as well as ensuring your makeup is evenly blended on your face. You will want to choose a foundation that is again best suited for your skin type because if you have oily skin and you use a think creamy foundation it will only cause your skin to look oilier. Next is concealer, the secret weapon. Concealer under your eyes will create that look of youthfulness as well as cover any little spots that your foundation was unable to cover. You always want to choose a concealer that is a tone lighter than your foundation. Then you want to set your foundation and concealer in place with loose powder. Use one that is either translucent or a match to your foundation, perhaps even a shade lighter. Last, but certainly not least, you will want to finish off with bronzer for that sun-kissed goddess effect. There are a few types of bronzers. It will depend on your preference but if you want a tan look with no shimmer chose a matte bronzer if you want a bronzer to add a tan as well as a glow then choose a bronzer with a shimmer.
Q. How do I apply make-up to get a natural look?
A. In order to get a natural look when applying makeup you want to choose colors that closely match you own tones. Usually beiges and browns and soft fleshy pinks work best. When selecting a foundation you want to pick one that closely matches your own skin tone. It should almost disappear when applied to your skin. I have put together a list of a few product with a link to each of them that you may want to try.
FOUNDATION: Lola Cosmetics - Oil-Free sheer Liquid Foundation , or Alison Raffaele - Reality Base Foundation
EYESHADOWS: Too Faced - Candy Bars - Brown Sugar , or Jilda Beverly Hills Silky Duos Eye shadows - Champagne/Kahlua
