This fall, some cosmetics will be baring it all. A new crop of nude hues are offering a fresh alternative to the popular pastels of spring and neons of summer. Here are the must-have neutral shades for the upcoming season.
When it comes to neutral makeup, there's perhaps nothing as quintessential as a nude lipstick (especially when paired with a smoky eye). But with so many different variations and textures, it's hard to find one that ideally complements the skin. "Nude lipstick can look chalky, especially if it's opaque or too thick," says makeup artist Nick Barose. "So opt for sheerer textures with a hint of sheen to avoid looking too pale." Giorgio Armani Rouge d’Armani in 111 is a perfect desert sand shade with a sheer formula that truly looks great on everyone.
When going nude on blush, make sure the blush has a "slight golden sheen to it, so that your skin looks radiant," Barose says. The best option? A rose hue with bronze undertones. Try Lancôme Blush Subtil Palette in Rose Flush, which offers a matte tan shade to contour, a shimmery rose for a natural flush and an iridescent pale pink to highlight.
The trick to going neutral on the eyes without looking washed out this fall is to pick shades that “are not matte, with a hint of pink in them,” Barose says. Make Up For Ever’s latest Aqua Shadow in 28E is just that, a soft pinky-beige with a gorgeous champagne sheen. Another great pearly beige eye shadow is L'Oréal Infallible 24 HR Eye Shadow in Iced Latte.
The main problem with bronzers of the past has usually been their unnatural orange cast. But this upcoming season, that elusive believable tan has been nailed with Guerlain Terracotta Light Sheer Bronzing Powder. Concentrate the true bronze color just on the high points of the face to make skin look healthy, rather than applying it everywhere for an allover glow (which should be reserved for summer). Guerlain's version comes in an array of six mosaic-like shades that cater to every skin tone from alabaster to ebony, and its sheer finish makes it especially perfect for the colder months.
