New York Fashion Week: The Blonds

At The Blonds's fall 2013 ready-to-wear show, the beauty look was all about a cool blonde with a dangerous mien. If that sounds like a woman straight from an Alfred Hitchcock film, well, that's exactly correct. But to keep things unexpected, Stanley Kubrick's edgy sensibility was thrown in the inspirational mix.
Makeup artist Kabuki focused on a bright red eyelid and a flourish of winged liner that was meant to evoke the quintessential horror movie heroine. To create the updated '50s cat eyes, Kabuki painted MAC Chromacake in Basic Red in a flick shape on the top lash lines and accentuated the shape with a graphic flare of MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack. He then dusted the lower lash lines with MAC Eye Shadow in Carbon for added smokiness. Perfectly luminous skin, contoured cheekbones and neutral glossy lips completed the look.
Big blonde wigs were used for all the models to lend a homogenous feel to the show without sacrificing individual personality. The hair had plenty of structure mixed with a certain wild quality to it. “Think of it as Marilyn Monroe on acid—a being-up-all-night kind of look,” said hairstylist Nick Irwin. The wigs were first prepped with TIGI Catwalk Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo and set in hot rollers to create a texturized effect. After the rollers were locked in with TIGI Catwalk Work-It Medium-Firm Hold Working Hairspray, Irwin backcombed the wigs from the roots using a Mason Pearson brush, giving the overall look a thicker softness. Once the massive shape was achieved, Irwin finished the wigs with a spritzing of TIGI Catwalk Sleek Mystique Look-Lock Hairspray.

To hone in on the Hitchcock-meets-Kubrick theme, manicurist Roxanne Valinoti gave a distinct thriller vibe to nails. The most standout tips bore images of Janet Leigh in the famous Psycho shower scene and Jack Nicholson from The Shining that Valinoti shellacked prior to the show onto long press-on oval nails.
