Lip Color for Every Occasion

The great thing about lip color is that it can change your look instantly. Go from au naturel to dramatic with a little lip color for any occasion.

For a subtle and natural look, use a tinted lip balm. The Balm Plump Your Pucker Lip Gloss Pot is fabulously sheer with a light tint. As a bonus, it will give your pucker a little more plump.

If you want to go dramatic, red is the hue for you. Most women have a hard time finding the perfect shade of red for their skin tone, so here's some guidance.

If you have a warm skin tone, try a red with a little mahogany in it. Look for shades that say wine and berry. Cooler skin tones will benefit from a red shade with blue undertones. If you are nervous about wearing red, try something more subtle, like a sheer lip gloss with a hint of the fiery shade.

Lip Gloss vs. Lipstick

There are some vast differences between lip gloss and lipstick. Here's a breakdown so you can decide which is best for your pout.

Lipstick adds pigment and color to your mouth and is typically drier than a gloss. If you want to enhance the color of your lips or make a drastic change, lipstick is the right choice.

Lip gloss is moist (and sometimes sticky) and gives lips a shiny appearance. Need a little oomph? Many lip glosses now have plumping products in them. Lip gloss tends to have less pigment than lipstick, but it can still enhance your lip color slightly.

If you always wear lipstick, try lip gloss for a week. You may find that a gloss smooths the fine lines on your lips and even plumps them up. For all you lip gloss wearers, try lipstick for a week and enjoy the wide variety of colors.

Lip Makeup Application

Lip makeup is the best way to complete your overall look. Add a dash of color or shine and you're on your way. Here are a few tips on how to apply lip makeup correctly.

  • Apply a lip base, like Cargo Lip Base, prior to your lip makeup application. This will condition your lips and prep them for color.
  • If you are wearing lipstick, use a lip liner first and then fill in with the same liner.
  • Don't use lip liner to enhance the size of your lips. It's only meant to enhance what is already there.
  • Apply your lipstick with a lip brush, like Lola Cosmetics Pointed Lip Brush.
  • If you want some shine, apply a clear lip gloss to set the color. Try Tini Beauty Liptini Topper Lip Gloss in Vodka, which is an ultra-clear gloss with a high shine factor.

Plumping Your Pout

You don't have to go under the knife to get a plumper pout. Here's how to get lips like Angelina Jolie.

Sugar Cosmetics Pump ‘N Shine Duo is great for beginners who might be timid about bigger being better. The Pump ‘N Shine Duo is a lip gloss/plumper duo that will give you the shine you want, while pumping up your pucker, too.

For someone with more experience, Fusion Beauty XL Micro-Injected Collagen Lip is the perfect product for you. Swipe it on your lips and wake up with some plump, firm and sexy lips -- naturally. This product uses hyaluronic acid, which is a powerful plumping agent.

The crème de la crème of lip plumping products is the Too Faced Lip Injection Set. This set comes with their famous Lip Injection that will give your lips instant fullness, Extreme Lip Injection which will plump your pout for the long term, a Lip Injection Mask that is like a facial for your lips and also Techno-color, a fabulous lip gloss by Too Faced.

Protecting Your Pout

We all know we're supposed to exfoliate, moisturize and protect our skin, but did you know you should do the same for your lips?

  • Exfoliation. This will keep dead skin from building up on your lips. Just use a soft wash cloth in the shower to gently massage your lips every few days.
  • Moisturize. Choose a great moisturizing lip balm or salve and apply daily. Try Hamadi Shea Lip Balm because it softens your lips with avocado and jojoba oils.

  • Protect. Apply an SPF to your lips just as you do with your skin. B Kamins Lip Balm has SPF 20 that protects from both UVA and UVB rays.
If three steps is too much, consider an all-in-one product like Murad Energizing Pomegranate Lip Therapy. This product exfoliates gently with salicylic acid, moisturizes with shea butter, protects with SPF 15 and gives you a glossy finish!
