We know what you’re thinking: Me? In electric blue eyeshadow, bubblegum pink blush, and beyond-fuchsia lipstick? NO. THANK. YOU. Before shutting down the idea completely, give us a minute to try to convince you. Bright hues (one at a time, ladies; never-ever more than one at a time) are actually one of the easiest ways to give your complexion an instant glow. Here’s how our expert suggests adding a little shock value to your look.
Want a risk-free way to brush up to brights? Paint on polish. Reserving shocking shades for your fingernails or toenails allows you to sample the trend, but in small doses. Golden yellow and sunset orange lacquers look majestic on darker skin tones while cooler hot pinks and grassy greens compliment fair complexions.
The idea of a turquoise eye shadow may seem intimidating, but Maybelline Global Makeup Artist Charlotte Willer says vibrant hues look good on everyone. It’s not about the color you swipe on (though Willer has found purples to be universally flattering). “What matters most is the shadow’s texture and how it’s applied,” she says. To create an intense eye look that doesn’t go overboard, Willer recommends shimmer shadows. “They’re easier to blend than matte textures, which can end up looking like heavy stage makeup,” she says. Start by applying the bold shadow like a liner along the upper lash line. Willer stresses the importance of swiping on as many coats as needed until the color that appears on your skin matches the shade of the shadow in the packaging. Otherwise, the finished result can appear watered down and messy. Then, switch to a more neutral beige or gray shadow and blend it out past the crease and up towards the brow bone.
When it comes to playing up your pout, “there are no rules,” says Willer. As long as you obey the evergreen makeup mantra, which is to only focus on one feature by playing up either the eyes or the lips (in this case lips), you’ll turn heads for all the right reasons. Her favorite standout hues for lips this summer are hot pinks and tangerines. Two to try: Maybelline Color Sensational in Fifth Avenue Fuchsia and Coral Crush. For a modern way to wear bright hues on your pucker try this: Dab the lipstick in the center of the lips; using a brush, blend the color outward toward the edges of the mouth; finish with a hint of gloss in the center of the lips.
