You’re likely paying close attention to the needs of the skin on your face, but when’s the last time you thought about giving your armpits a little TLC? The skin in this area is often overlooked and super sensitive, so taking proper care of it can be tricky if you’re not well versed in the dos and don’ts. Ahead, find out how to address a variety of armpit concerns, from hair removal to discoloration.

Hair Removal

There are quite a few routes you can go when it comes to removing unwanted hair on your armpits — although it’s totally cool if you like your hair right where it is, too. When done properly, shaving eliminates stubble while preventing ingrown hairs and any possible inflammation. Remember that hair under your arms can grow in various directions, which means you may have to shave in more than just one downward motion.

First things first: gently exfoliate the area prior to shaving (a product like Kiehl’s Gently Exfoliating Body Scrub or your loofah will do) and use a conditioning shaving cream for smooth results. (One of our favorites is the Fieldtrip Travel Blazer Anywhere Shave Lotion.) Before you consider skipping exfoliation, know that it actually helps prevent underarm odor. When you’re ready to shave, be sure to use a fresh blade for a close and comfortable shave.

Waxing is also highly effective at removing armpit hair and the results can leave you smooth for weeks instead of days. Try it at home with a kit or seek the help of a professional esthetician or wax expert to ditch the daily stubble. Another long-term option is laser. It can be pricey, but six to ten sessions of laser hair removal will leave your underarms feeling baby soft for good. Just be sure to do your research before going this route.

Odor

There are steps you can take if you’re worried about body odor. For starters, be sure to keep your clothes and body clean and use an antiperspirant or deodorant like the Native Oat Milk Latte Deodorant. This unique scent is perfect for fall, plus it contains coconut oil and shea butter for a soft and smooth feel that protects against sweat and odor. Just be sure to wait at least 10 minutes after shaving to apply deodorant to avoid any irritation or rashes.

Discoloration

Underarm hyperpigmentation, excessive darkening or changes of the skin can be caused by a few things. Overexposure to UV rays can stimulate and produce brown-colored pigment, and hormonal changes and allergic reactions to products can also contribute. Underarm hair tends to be dark and coarse, which gives off the appearance of a shadow because the stubble sits just below the surface of your skin. Waxing can help prevent this shadow if it bothers you as well.
