The fall 2010 haute couture collections took place this past week in Paris, and while many of the shows were scaled down even by ready-to-wear standards—the Dior show (shown above) was in a simple tent behind the Musée Rodin—they still presented the most spectacular, mouth-watering fashion creations imaginable. Equally awe-inspiring was the makeup and hair. Because the beauty at couture isn't about trends but rather, like the clothes, about divinity and artistry, this is when makeup artists really flex their creative muscles. Click through to see my favorite looks from the shows. Which makeup did you like best?
Chicest lip color: The velvety matte cranberry lipstick at Chanel, worn with an otherwise nude face. Like the Chanel 2.55 bag, the look was both classic and desirable.
Sexiest eyes: The avenger-like winged shadow at Elie Saab. It was like smoky eyes on steroids, which fits perfectly with the fervor that surrounds couture.
Best mix of real world and fantasy: The cheerful orange-y red lips at Jean Paul Gaultier would look good on just about anyone. The out-to-there feathery false eyelashes, however, could make even a showgirl blush. But together, the two elements balanced each other out for a look that was striking without being loud.
Most romantic makeup: The incandescent skin grazed by wisps of hair. The lids frosted in white shimmer. The fluttery lashes and icy rose lips. Valentino's makeup and hair was so ethereal, I'm surprised the show didn't take place on a cloud.
Coolest interpretation of "floral": The color-block eye designs in every shade under the Skittle rainbow at Dior. The show was inspired by flowers, which could have easily pushed the makeup in a cheesy direction—but genius makeup artist Pat McGrath instead went with graphic, futuristic etches of color across the eyes and nearly black lips, all of which evaded even a hint of froufrouness.
